Ok lol listen,

I was thinking to myself today and was wondering. Why cant my pets talk?
Refering to Dogs and Cats. They Have Vocal chords, they meow and bark. (all the time [-X )
Why cant they talk. After listening to Us (their owners) Talk, you would think they would atleast pick up something. Like a baby. Why cant your pet say "Mamma , "dadda" lol

Because they're stupid?

Because they're not capable of producing the sounds a human can?

Because they're ANIMALS, not humans?

Why cant they talk.

They can't talk in the same manner as you or I because they have different vocal chords, a parrot can talk because they're very good at copying and they have very similar vocal chords.

Look at parrots, not the smartest things in the world but they can talk.

I don't know much about parrots but I believe all a parrot can do in the matter of talking is mimic human speech, so they don't know what they're talking about.

Well some pets can communicate with their own kind, so they HAVE to talk in some ways. But to talk with a human...ya I don't think their brain can handle it.

Ya. Parrots don't actually understand what they are saying;they just say it. Animals can follow very little human speech. For example, when a dog knows tricks and you tell them to sit, he sits because he's been trained that when the word "sit" is said, he needs to put down his hind legs and sit. Human's essentially learn language the same way. We watch older people when we are young and just follow their example and listen to what words they say and associate them with objects and actions. Animals just aren't humans and don't really need to understand human speech to survive. They get along fine on their own (usually). It's all part of the circle of life.

And speaking of mimicry in nature...here's a fun clip.

Sorry, Slimppu and Earth, I have to disagree.

Animals like dogs and cats can't speak like humans because they're not designed to, not because they're too stupid.

I've seen (and known a few myself) some dogs and cats which were smarter than many humans I've seen.

Though they can't recite our language, sometimes they act as if they understand it. They also speak to us in other ways. Their eyes, tails, ears, body language, and subtle sounds speak volumes when we listen.

Who's the smarter mammal? We can't understand their barks, meows and various other sounds nor can we recite their language in anyway obviously intelligible. They seem to be able to understand our words, tones, and voices, though their speech doesn't appear to be intelligible to us.

You've got a good point, Duke, Humans learn from other humans, animals learn human communication from humans. Humans can talk to other humans of the same language fine, and animals of the same species can talk to each other fine. But Animals speaking to humans doesn't work. Neither can a native born French person speak to a native born Japanese person. They can communicate somewhat, but they don't know each other's language. Is the French man dumb? Is the Japanese man dumb? No. Neither are. They're both intelligent human beings, they just don't know each other's native form of communication.

The same scenario works between a mute/deaf person and a normal person. One can't speak very well (usually, though some deaf people speak very well) and the other can speak perfectly. The mute/deaf person can speak sign language or write in brail fluently but the normal person doesn't know the first thing about it. Are either dumb? No. They're both intelligent.

I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm sorry if I did.

Do animals like dogs speak a language that only dogs can understands and not us, Humans?
And dogs cannot understand our language?

I thought my theory was great, huh.

Are you kidding? David Attenborough is the man at documentaries. He is awesome. (So is Morgan Freeman, too.) I think he does a great job of bringing nature to the rest of the world. He does a great job in both Planet Earth and The Blue Planet series. Great narrator, in my estimation.

Back to the main topic, thanks Jasonmrc for putting my thoughts into better words. :P You totally hit it on the nail. My thoughts exactly. =D>

Animals cant understand our language, and we cant understand theirs. They have to communicate somehow so they must have a language.

Animals can learn commands by being taught to do a certain thing when they hear a certain sound.

Other than Humans, birds can learn basic languages, along with monkeys, but monkeys can't talk, but they can read English, French, etc. If an animal that can talk fluent English, French, etc, then I will be amazed in what Humans can do to a poor, helpless animal that has a brain the size of a human brain.
