Going off what addiv said, swearing is superfluous. It doesn't really add much to a conversation. The same ideas or feelings expressed in swearing can easily be expressed in different ways. The fact of the matter is, the game is better off leaving the swearing out. Perhaps if people were really up tight about this, they could do what WoW did and allow you to turn a chat filter on or off for blocking or showing bad words. Then, it's up to the person whether or not they want to swear. Still, it's better just to not have it there at all.

It doesn't make someone an idiot, people use them to express anger, frustration, etc. I don't think it's an awful idea to have it in game, having a filter option and the ability to report someone for harassing someone else using that language would be a lot better than what it is now.

Every other word ALL THE TIME shows you are an idiot, I never said that if you say it once you are an idiot

No one in this topic said they'd use it every other word. Being able to report someone, even if your filter is off, would stop that. I think using any kind of insult for no reason is pretty immature :>

Profanity for me usually happens as a knee-jerk reaction to something happening faster than I can react to it. One of our Danes has a tail that slices through the air like a whip. Since he's also about waist high, I occasionally end up doubled over on the floor and not really thinking happy thoughts. This is where I find profanity useful. To ease the pain.

Nothing painful in-game. Plus you actually have to type out the profanity so its not really spontaneous. Ok, I'm done beating a dead horse.

They could have an age limit for saying swears, like when you say your birthday you can have a restriction, like 16 plus swearing.

Have you ever been to a middle/high school? Someone of the people swear every other word. I'm pretty sure around that age is the demographic for RuneScape. Oh, and people in the topic ≠ everyone in RS

Couldn't they just lie about their age? :P

Sure. So? It's not like people don't do that anyway. The only difference is they are knowingly going around the system and are probably fine with swear words, too. That's just an assumption and I could explain the whole thought behind it, but I think you would understand what I mean and where I'm coming from.

Unless you are being sarcastic, then I'll answer this seriously and simply. "*******" is different from saying just "***" or just "hole." The words by themselves don't bring to mind *******. Putting the two words together makes an entirely different meaning. And, when used with certain references in mind, ******* is not a nice word. Sure, *** isn't nice either, but it's what you might say less demeaning, at least in my opinion. Hole is just hole. No qualms there.

You'd think so, but I doubt that would necessarily happen. Like was mentioned earlier. Some people just like to swear a lot and would continue to swear night and day if you gave them the opportunity. Most people aren't like that, but I think for the most part people would swear regularly given there was no filter. Just my thought, though.

Edit: Messed up quote code.

I'd have to agree, there's no reason to let people go on swearing, it's just superfluous, unattractive, it's not knee-jerk for typing, and if you are swearing just to swear, it means that you are considered old enough to do so, but not intelligent enough to know when it is and isn't appropriate to do so. Basically you show how much of an immature highschooler you are, it doesn't make you cool, just stupid when it's excessive. I don't want people mouthing off on Runescape like Itzlupo did in MW.

A Kid asked Jesus, "How much do you love me?" and Jesus said. "This much." And spread his arms out on the cross and died. If you believe that he did this for you put this in your signature.

I think that they should implement a word replacement for swear words. So when someone types:

"You are a ******* *******, noob!"

It is replaced with:

"You are a noble gentleman, M'Lord!"

Swearing does not belong in a game where the atmosphere and setting are designed to portray the days of knightly chivalry, honour and respect.

Call me old fashioned.

Word replacement would make the game look even more childish-friendly more than it is already.
Uncensoring it all would make the kids boosting up their awesomeness when they swear.

In both ways, you lose.

No matter what, the game censors everything that doesn't need to be censored (I remember a couple of items actually being censored XD). Most people who play RS are immature preteens who think lieing about everything and be a total ****** is the "cool" thing to do. Actually, most people who I've seen online fit into that. It gets really annoying when I come home after a bad day thinking I can go game to forget about what had happened that day and... what do you know, the exact same thing I had already put up with 10 hours is also the same exact thing I have to deal with when I try to relax. I dunno, I think Jagex just needs to make the ignore list a bit bigger. I filled up my 100 spaces about 2 years ago.

Yeah, the ignore list is FTW! People don't realize that when they are obnoxious and person after person puts them on their ignore list, they end up over time not having anyone to bother... they are essentially removed from the game. :)

I say they should come out with a system similar to VAC. I call it (RlS). Runescape language system. Or something like that. The programmers could go in-game for about a month and see what are the most common ways to swear in-game (they probably have a good idea already) and bypass the censoring system. Then, they make a program that detects these methods (or input predictions they think will lead to a bypass). Then, if people were caught excessivley swearing (or trying to bypass the system), they get automatically booted after a period of time (known to jagex only). They would have to create a new account. Wouldn't matter if you paid for a years membership (just like VAC) or, had very rare items in the game. Should think about that before ya go on a swearing rampage with 12 year olds playing at the same time.

Also, i recently discovered that with the new counterstrike source update, if you mute a players voice, it also mutes their text. Maybe jagex should come up with something like that.

Cheers, dafin0

No, I think they should still be censored. *** I don't mind *wink wink* but anything more than that would do more harm than good to the game.
