I think the perception of the "enjoyability" of the game is a matter of personal attitude.
I personally think the G.E. was one of the best updates in the game so far. No more standing around trying to sell your produced goods and haggling over prices. Indeed, price manipulation clans are an annoyance and take advantage of the system, and certainly should be dealt with. But in the end, their temporary effect on a particular item is just that: temporary.
I feel that people are in general a bit impatient these days. The approach I take to the game is to enjoy the experience on a day to day basis. Not getting too hung up on ultimately achieving the 99 skillcape goal too much.
My attitude is that I will accept any update that Jagex feels is important to implement in the game, and try my best to adapt my gameplay and strategy based on the change. It stimulates creativity in gameplay, that is for certain. With each and every update to the game is a new experience, perhaps even a new strategy to goal achievement. Updates and changes are important in order to keep the game from getting stale.
Just remember that when something is new, there is a heightened sense of excitement and an increased level of interest. Once you have been playing for a while, the sense of newness wears off. Which means that in order to keep your interest in the game, it is not up to Jagex to spoon feed you new material, but up to you to adjust your attitude in playing the game. Also, if you tend to take the quick and easy route to goal achievement, when you ultimately reach that goal the level of satisfaction is lessened somewhat. Don't be in so much of a hurry to get that quick and easy 99. Enjoy the experience of working for it.
For me, I know that RS will probably not come to an end as a game in the near future. Keeping that parameter in mind, I am in no rush to max out but play the game as if every day is a new experience. If I become bored working on one particular task or skill, I ask myself "what's something new I haven't tried before?" And believe me, there are tons of things I haven't even tried yet in the game (soulwars, mobilizing armies, clan wars, god wars dungeon, pest control...). I just haven't gotten around to them that's all. For me the updates and the new things introduced into the game keep me interested in finding new ways to train skills. Hardly boring at all, for me anyways. I can hardly keep up with all the new stuff being added all the time. It's somewhat overwhelming at times.
I think that the glory days are relative to your newness to the game and especially your own personal attitude. I still love playing. And, I've recently thought that when I finally achieve a 99 skillcape will I be sad that I won't have a major goal in that particular skill to work towards? So, my attitude now is to enjoy working towards my goals, but don't get too hung up in achieving them... enjoy my time playing. And, by the way, my goal is to achieve multiple 99's all in a row (many of them). Can you imagine the thrill of having about 8-10 skills at lvl 98 just begging to be leveled all at once? Now that is going to be a epic string of fireworks! LOL I just hope that I don't get depressed afterwards. Haha. I honestly don't think I will.
Find your enjoyment. It is there if you want it to be there. Don't just play the game, live the game.
