My advice is to write programs that aren't assigned as homework. It doesn't really matter what the programs do, as long as they use what you have gone over in class. It helps you to better understand the material if you do your own thing.
With programming, you can really teach yourself just about any aspect. If you're wondering about how to do something, it's likely that someone else has already asked on one of the many forums and a quick Google search can cover almost anything you don't know. However, most professors will frown on using code that the class hasn't gone over yet. So for your assignments, stick with what's been done in class.
I don't have any Python specific advice because I have not taken any classes on it yet.
Ya, I think that's the best way. There are enough programmers on RSBandB that you could send them a pm asking for help, but other than making your own programs, nothing else. Just try to teach yourself.
