He was a mental patient apparently. I read about it and witnesses said that he just road off like nothing had happened.

He wasn't trying to get away. He left as if he had done nothing wrong.

Well, this just proves that this world has messed up people everywhere, and even when you think you are safe, whether on a plane or at an Amish school house, someone comes along and destroys that security... [-X

You're right, sorry for my bad choice of words, but the man had another adress of a child nursery, 3km away. The man was 20 years old, had mental problems, and still has. Such acts are a test on society, tieng him up and letting other people do as they please, would indeed serve no cause, as the man wouldn't probably mind, and you wouldn't solve anything. He will be put in a special psychiatric wing in a jail for the rest of his miserable life.
The only fear I have now are copycats.
Btw, it's easy to flee cops on a bike, esp in old cities like Bruges and Brussels.

Would it be considered inappropriate to have security guards at nurseries and schools simply for the fact society is so **** up we are all in danager of being shot, stabbed, robbed, etc wherever we are? :/

Well...I think something to keep in mind is that these things don't happen on a day-to-day basis (or at least that's the way it seems to me). I wouldn't say it's inappropriate to have security guards everywhere, but perhaps unnecessary. Look at it this way, unless you went on a worldwide campaign to stop a problem (like we did with smallpox), these things will just keep happening. Putting in security guards would help a lot, sure. But it's very difficult to find a permanent fix to such an irrational motive and problem. :| The other issue partly at stake is privacy and rights. If you started putting guards everywhere watching everybody at every moment of everyday, then soon, we would be living in a police state society. We would be relying on people above us to protect us and giving-up protecting ourselves. I'm not saying that trying to protect innocent people is wrong, in fact in some cases and places, it is necessary to have a security guard around to be a presence. But I view this as one horrible case committed by one person on a seemingly irrational basis. You probably have a better chance of being hit by lightning or attacked by a shark than this happening again. Granted, that may be a gross overstatement, but I think you see what I mean.

I agree. I never liked the idea of jail or death sentence, it's the easy way out to me. Obviously jail is suitable for most crimes, but for stuff like this torture is my preferred method of punishment. After they've been tortured for a few days they can be killed.

So you want to use another inhumane method, toture to punish the guy. That just promotes more inhumane acts which is bad. It is kinda hypocritical.

You're wrong. Torture for extremely bad acts promotes fear, and fear controls the masses. Fear is the most power object we have at our disposal. Ever notice how society gets more and more out of hand as we get more and more lax with our punishments? It's because we're giving them no reason to fear being caught. If we reinstate fear into the justice system then there would be half the criminals there are today.

It would be the exact same thing as a parent spanking a child for misbehaving, only on a larger scale and more intense.
