Home Row Keys

In my computer apps class, we have to do regular typing exercises and I had no idea that my teacher cut off points from not using the home row keys where your fingers are placed over the second row with your index fingers on f and j.

Anyway, my grade has sunk because I don't type "properly" and just type differently. (I also type around 75 wpm when I'm not using the HRC system)

So yeah, that kind of sucks. D:

Do you use the home row keys when you type?

I do. The F and J keys are the easiest to find since most keyboards have bumps on them to find them without looking. I had a hard time adjusting to them but it makes it a lot easier to find the number keys and their special characters, something I'm doing constantly when writing code.

What I don't like about it is the awkward position it puts your wrists in. I picked up a split keyboard though and it makes a big difference.

i have never gotten used to the home row typing style. and honestly, i type well enough to get by. it's not like i only use 2 fingers or 1 finger to type, i just a lot of them. most likely not the proper way but hey if it works, don't fix it.

I've always used the home row keys ever since I learned to type properly in fifth grade. My fingers always end up there when not typing.

I typed more than twice as fast as anyone else in my computers class last year, so my teacher just let me do what I wanted during typing exercises. XD That was the standard optional computing class, but now it's split a little so students are expected to type reasonably well.

If I type now and observe which fingers I use, I rarely stray from the index and middle fingers, but I use the ring finger for some letters, thumb(s) for space, ring finger and sometimes little finger for shift. Right hand ring finger for enter, backspace, and other keys in that area. At rest, if I'm in the middle of typing, my fingers naturally lie near, if not on F and J, but I don't specifically feel for them. If not, then my left hand hand fingers lie in about the same places while my right hand fingers go for the arrow keys. Stupid Runescape.

No point trying to change how I type now anyway. I'd imagine it would be difficult to adapt, and you can't argue with 90-100 WPM on average.

I don't really know how to type the "real" way. I pretty much just found all the keys and got into the habit of pressing them But as for your situation, I don't think how you type should matter, as long as you get it done.
