I'd like to start a thread that discusses the uses that people have been able to put the new summoned monsters.

So far the only ones I value are the compost mound (lvl 28) and the Macaw (lvl 41).

I've tried the Macaw three times now and it seems it might be profitable.

On 55 summoner I was able to keep the Macaw alive long enough to use 22 scroll specials whilst getting on with some hunting for bird meat. The drops were as follows:

2 * Nothing
4 * Guam (which is needed to make the Macaw pouch so more useful now)
2 * Marrentill
2 * Tarromion
5 * Aventoe
2 * Irit
2 * Ranar
2 * Kwaurm
1 * Lantadyme

I also got an Irit from the Macaw when talking to it, as it collects herbs at random whilst summoned.

Essentially, for the pouch and 22 scrols the cost was 3.2 * 1950 (78 charms per pouch) = 5,848 gp

So one of the Ranar more than pays for this.

I like some of the special moves. For example:

The Bull Ants special move that restores your energy depending on your Agility level.

The Macaw's chances of creating herbs.

Barker toad where you can load a cannonball and hit 18 damage max.

Although I do think Jagex could have made these effects a lot better.

TBH looking at the herbs and the state of herblore, that isn't much good at all. Better ways of training herblore. :\

What colour charm does it use?

So far the only one I've seen that is even remotely useful is the compost. I don't believe they keep saying these monsters are so useful and powerful..they just..aren't.

Yeh, it's green and guam that you need, so not too hard to get.

But I agree, the uses of the monsters could have been much better.

Well honestly I don't see the point in all these Summoned Animals, they hit no damage, IF ANY, the scrolls don't give hardly any exp (0.1 exp per pouch) and most of the animals have good uses, but not THAT good.

I think Jagex are more focused on how they actually add that little bit of extra damage when fighting along-side you. I mean, if they were more powerful then you, then nobody would have to fight again. They're nice company to have, makes training for a higher summoning level more worthwhile.

But, come on. What did you expect? Summon King Black Dragon to kill the chaos elemental while only taking 2 damage?\

And there's still that February update. I'm saving my charms for then.

Only half of the familiars have been released with the update for summoner we had on Tuesday, the other half will be realeased sometime in February.

Ninja - have you tried the beaver yet? If so, how useful was it?

My friend has 41 Summoning, he says the Beaver isn't that good really.

I didn't expect a KBD but they *are* very underwhelming. Come on, a beaver that collects 5 logs? Woopey-fucking-do.

"Fletcher - counts as a knife for Fletching purposes" Wtf? The LOGS you use to summon it cost more than a bloody knife. XD What is the point?

Sorry that's all fine n dandy but it bloody costs logs to summon it. XD Very underwhelming. They just have these little minor add ons, that's not at all what people was looking for. I think jagexs problem is, their just trying to do these big massive complex skills and well, sorry but they suck at it.

Look at the older more successful skills, they aren't complex. There isn't 100 odd rewards for 100 odd things, cause that just creates 100 odd minor add ons and nothing that really makes people say "woah i need that".

NOTHING in summoning made people sit up and want to train the skill, nothing in it is that good that people NEED. Look at slayer, they had the right idea. Abby whips, well DAM i need one of those and i can make a fortune from it too.

It gives reason, purpose for the skill. It's like they went into this one worried they'd make it over powered and instead have just made it a very under powered, underwhelming skill. Farming was the same, woopey a spirit tree, gee wiz i need that what with all the other transports i already have. Not.

Construction was pretty much the same deal, i suppose you could argue the alter made it worth it but that didn't really attract me personally.

I agree with the altar with your POHs. Didn't really catch my eye either.

But also, you get combat levels for the logs with the Beaver, which also is useful for cash perposes.

Summoning is more of using the monsters for helping you with skills, not really fighting. But, when someone hits 99 and shows their dragon in action, we might change our minds.

Well, it'll be a novelty at least. I reckon we'll see the first one in about 6-8 weeks at the rate the top scorers are levelling.
