So, I have never dabbled in programming at all. But this year, I'm taking a CPSC 121 class in college. I want to see if I am interested in programming and whether Computer Science is a degree/career path for me. We will be using Python to program and playing around with the school's server that actually runs on Linux. My reason for the topic is to get some advice. I have never done programming before. Is there any advice you guys have? Are there any good tutorials out there, esp. for Python programmers? What's the best way to practice programming? Any help would be fantastic. I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy programming, but with the right help and guidance and a little interest, it might just become my area of study. Thoughts???

My advice is to write programs that aren't assigned as homework. It doesn't really matter what the programs do, as long as they use what you have gone over in class. It helps you to better understand the material if you do your own thing.

With programming, you can really teach yourself just about any aspect. If you're wondering about how to do something, it's likely that someone else has already asked on one of the many forums and a quick Google search can cover almost anything you don't know. However, most professors will frown on using code that the class hasn't gone over yet. So for your assignments, stick with what's been done in class.

I don't have any Python specific advice because I have not taken any classes on it yet.

But what did such a Teuton afterwards look like when he had been "improved" and led into a monastery? Like a caricature of a human being, like an abortion: he had become a "sinner," he was in a cage, one had imprisoned him behind nothing but sheer terrifying concepts... There he lay now, sick, miserable, filled with ill-will towards himself; full of hatred for the impulses toward life, full of suspicion of all that was still strong and happy. In short, a "Christian"... - Twighlight of the Idols

Ya, I think that's the best way. There are enough programmers on RSBandB that you could send them a pm asking for help, but other than making your own programs, nothing else. Just try to teach yourself.
