The most frequent request we have received over the last few months has been to put more PvP back into the game. We want to let you know that this request hasn't gone unheard, and that we've put a lot of research into how we can introduce new PvP mechanisms. The aim is for PvP content that better replaces the old Wilderness, but without reintroducing RWT.

Hopefully, you’re already aware of the imminent Clan Wars release (see the September Behind the Scenes in a couple of weeks for more information), but there are also plans afoot for the most exciting and "old school" PvP update we have ever considered – unique PvP worlds.

As many of our long term players know, in the old RuneScape Classic days you could actually fight players just outside the gates of Lumbridge, before the days of duelling and even before the days of the old Wilderness itself. Players could hunt each other down, chasing them away from favourite resource points and generally "owning" large areas of the map.

So, in 2008, we will be bringing you special 'PvP worlds', where you can fight other players almost anywhere! In addition to all the usual content you might expect to find in RuneScape, they will also include:
  • Optional sign-up – choose between PvP danger or stick to ordinary play by simply switching worlds.
  • High danger with items dropped on death.
  • High rewards for kills. To avoid any RWT issues the reward for a successful PK will be generated by the game, similar to when you kill a monster at the moment. We're creating generous drop tables based on factors like your levels and the impressiveness of the kill.
  • These drop tables will include "PvP world specific" items like XP-modifying gear, lvl 70+ equipment and new, glorious, short-term but hard hitting gear. These will once again make PKing a viable source of income.
  • PvP across 99% of the world, including the old Wilderness.
  • Attack any player within a certain level of your own. Level range depends on the area, similar to the old Wilderness levels.
  • ...And all sorts of other twists on interesting content... Just think of the possibilities when you can PK anywhere!

Naturally, we also have other PvP-orientated content, like Stealing Creation (a resource control game where skillers and PKers work together, creating equipment and beating up the opposition) and Mobilising Armies (a real-time strategy game where you use your hard made bows, swords, etc. to equip your own armies in 4-player battles).

Add all this to a healthy schedule of quests (featuring Arrav and the sequel to Spirit of Summer), holiday events and some unique puzzle content... and the rest of '08 has something for almost everyone.

Finally, we'd like to let you in on a little secret – we're currently working on our highest level, longest, most exciting quest ever. Not necessarily for launch in '08 (it's not something we want to rush, after all), it’s already had more development time than the entirety of "Recipe for Disaster"... but you’ll have to wait to find out more. We're adding secret hints and references all the time about this one, so if you need to know more, just look around! Leave no stone unturned...

All I can say is wow. Too bad this came out today and not yesterday. The world PvP was an idea that I had but didn't post it in suggestions soon enough :( But most importantly I like the way that these new PvP minigames look, granted we'll be at the mercy of the RS Population to know what's going on.

Oh and the quest, about time for another high leveled one :P

A lot of people will like this. However, I do not. (I never liked pking, and pking everywhere? :x )

I will not go onto those worlds.

2/5

Woah .. reminds me of WoW's realms - normal vs. PvP. The rewards won't be what they used to, but it's better than not having the update. Sounds like Jagex could make up for the wilderness pking with this one .. Wondering which areas have higher levels of risk though.

The quest sounds like something lots of us have been looking for too .. this behind the scenes sure will have a lot of hype.

That'll be awesome, providing the drops are as generous as they say they are. However, the who;e "drop all your items on death" might just make it a killfest. I don't know.

I'm kinda lookin' forward to this because it might help out the economy with pots and food. Bring it back or at least close to what it used to be when PKing was still around. Im sick of runes dropping like flies ever since the guild came out too... :?

I can NOT wait. Rts games are my favourite and I can't wait to see what they do on runescape for this.
I'm not as excited about the pking worlds but maybe it will shut up the pures. If this becomes really popular there may be a whole lot of pures in runescape again which is something I'm not looking forward to.

The high leveled quest should be awesome I'm really looking forward to it. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

amazing, I wasn't around for pking, but I'm sure I'll go to a f2p world with no armor and weapons and test it out =P

3/5 till we know more.

Jagex has failed miserably with the PVP replacements, and I'd be willing to bet this isn't going to help all that much. I'm thinking a certian section of mid-high level players will find this useful, but I don't see how the drop rate will be implemented effectively.

I am looking forward to the minigames but the pvp world...... I would hate that. It is probaly going to be 1/2 or 1/3 of the worlds are going to be turned into pvp world and that is going to make it really different. 3/5 for the minigame update and 0/5 for the pvp stuff so i am saying 0/5.

A PVP world would be interesting, I don't know if it would work very well, but it would be very interesting. Hopefully they would remove the revenants from the wilderness in those worlds. I'm really looking forward to some of the minigames they speak of, as there's some great potential. Also yay for another superquest.

JaGeX's idea of decent rewards are likely to be a whole lot different to ours. I mean they class high level as 85 :?
I give it a 2/5 because like PFK, I want to know more.

Sounds good. I just hope Jagex won't screw this up.

I've gotten to the point where I believe that even though Jagex can promise good updates, they don't do it for the players. They do it for themselves. People have been quitting because of the lack of PvP, but they won't allow people to get other's items from drops because it'll open the door to RWT again. This is why players will be dropping this new armour. What is likely to happen, is that the items dropped will reflect the worth of the items the losing player lost.

So if a player is killed while wear a white party hat, it'd be right to expect a drop reflecting that. But if you kill a level 3 wearing a party hat, you may recieve only a reduced amount because of the easiness of the kill.
