You have 8 Realms that was a flop and scrapped, Mechscape that was an infernal waste of time, money, and resources, and even Transformer's progress is nearly non-existant from a recent article I saw. Back this up with legal battles, resources to battle bots, and a general "belt tightening" of finances around the world, it leads to major squandered cash, decreased revenue, and wasted company resources. Rather than up the membership cost, they release these micro-transactions. I really don't see how anyone can't understand the need for these. Jagex was behind the times on this, really. Zynga's business is completely based on these micro-transactions, and they have done major business with this.
As for years ago, think of what they had. What we can assume a third of the staff, Funorb ad and micro-transactions revenue from low cost games like Archanists, smaller offices, probably less than half the servers - dramatically less costs. Internet gaming has evolved, and now left Jagex in the dust. Mobile gaming would have been huge for them, but they believed in browser gaming. Now it seems like they are trying to catch up.
I think such news posts are very important for a community like RS's. They are involved, so the communication from Jagex should be relevant and often. Live Q&As are a good step, and hopefully they won't be trolled to death and make them not want to do them anymore after this.
