Zamorak robe bottoms (the treasure trail ones) would be slightly better because of increased prayer bonus, and I personally use a rune defender (really a matter of preference).
It really is a matter of preference, as the xp difference with both is barely noticeable (also a matter of having 19 mil to spend =P). And yeah, mages have like 0 defence.
