I am aiming for 80 smithing with gold ore, however, is there any other methods less costly?

Gold is most efficient way to 80.
I worked it out about a month ago and got 80.
Via gold.

BTW - use the edge furnace? So you have the ability to smith 2 gold bars at once. It speeds it up a lot in the long run.

Yes, the rule only applies with the Edge furnace.

2 bars at once makes up for fighting to get thru the door into that furnace that is one person at a time.
