I would suggest these two books - http://www.headfirstlabs.com/books/hfjava/ and http://www.headfirstlabs.com/books/hfdp/ You can get the, very cheap on Amazon. HeadFirst are amazing.

They are written in normal people speak ;p I have used two so far and I love them The HTML one is very good also. I am using c# and the design patterns books right now for my web dev 2 class.
