Take about 200k out of that money pouch I see there and buy a Warrior's Ring. Its +4 to your slash bonus, not much but it helps, and you can sell it after nomad if you so desire.
Most people have ranged him because it's easier, but there are a few that have had some success in melee, and i recently seen someone mage nomad as well.
