Why is it when a program stops responding I click "Close program" that itself stops responding? I thought that button did the equivalent of killing the process.
That always works.

might be the operating system, if you have an older on, try to upgrade if possible
Clicking the 'X' button runs the shutdown thread, once that is complete it will end the process unless there is some sort of problem.
