do .png files work with adobe flash CS5.5? i am trying to learn flash, but I can't import the .png files that I made (i am on mac) also. how do i get a white background to be nothing (keyed out auto)

Yeah, you should be able to import .pngs, and if they've got a transparent background, they'll remain transparent on Flash. Mind you, you need to "import" in the file menu instead of "open".
As for how you get them transparent, use an editing program like Photoshop of Gimp that uses layers. Simply delete the whiteness, and it should show a checkered patten. That means it's transparent.
Lastly, jpgs don't use transparency, so be sure you remember to save the file as a .png.
If that doesn't work, use the polygonal lasso tool in Flash to extract the image without the white background.

Png's should already have an alpha channel for transparencies. Occasionally in Gimp I've had to add the alpha channel but it's easy to do. #graphics
