Laidlaw by William McIlvanney if you can get a hold of a copy. Brilliant book if you understand it deeply enough.

What Tagg said, Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. W.E.B. Griffin books are good if you're into military type books.
