If you're on Mac OS you want to increase your java heap size.

Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences.

Add -Xms256m and -Xmx1024m to your runtime options.

64bit or 32bit? or both? and I know -Xmx1024m allocates 1024MB of memory but what does -Xmx256m -Xmx1024m do?

Xms sets the minimum heap size.
Xmx sets the max heap size.

I just do it for both as I'm not sure which on RS ends up using.
