do you guys know if it is possible to use the protect from prayers against the metal

dragons range attack? or do they only work on the melee?

Their range attack is dragonfire. Using a shield and a potion or a super antifire potion will negate all damage at a distance.

protect from magic will also help lower the damage from it's ranged fire breathe attack (as well as it's regular fire breathe attacks) however not nearly as well as the shield or potions do.
