Right you did that part correct. Now there should be a small sqaure in the bottom right corner to adjust the size of the white background. Click and drag it to the size of the screeny in the middle.

If in paint, highlight the area you wish to keep with the dotted box, rightclick and select "crop" which should be at the bottom of the dropdown list.
