Where do you put liquid dishwasher fluid in a dishwasher? The geary knob thing? (On the inside?)

there should be a little square tab that is open, put it there and the close the tab and start the dishwasher.
I was thinking that, then scrapped it because I wondered how it would open?
Is there an automatic bar that touches it so it would release?
usually on either the sides or above or below it there is a little tab you can push to open it.
