That's odd that it would lag you. Perhaps there could in future be a setting to disable the event notifications... You could manually do it using Greasemonkey but it would be too much hassle.
Anyway I'd agree that it's more likely that the flash ads would interfere with RuneScape if you're still using a single core processor, or if you have a laptop, or something like that.
