Okay please help me...

I was on palringo (free iphone app) and i was talking to someone in public chat.. Then i pmed the person.. After that he said he was sniffing my ip.. I was on wifi.. Then he showed me a pic of my ip adress in his command promt with the words "ESTABLISHED" and "LISTENING"

He made statements like

"does ur router have a generic password.. I hope not"
and "do online banking?"

also

"im going to install a netbus in hyour router"

The real question is.. Is this true??

And

even if he did do this (with my wifi ip address) could he get the information off my main computer..? for example if my brother pays bills off the main computer.. Can he steal the credit card info off my brothers computer.. With only the ip address that he found off my iphone??

So, have I got this right? You were on your iPhone connected to your HOME wifi router, and someone claimed to have your IP address. If I haven't got that right, tell me. However, I'll assume that's correct.

In which case that is perfectly possible- it shouldn't be beyond the realms of a mere mortal to find your IP address.

First thing's first change your router password. This won't stop somebody getting in from the outside, but it will prevent them altaring your router configuration- which you definitely do not want.

Secondly make sure you have a firewall (Zonealarm or Comodo are good) and set it to "high alert" (or similar).

Apart from that, there's nothing much you can do. It takes a pretty good hacker to get passed a router and firewall and install something on your computer. Although make sure you run virus/malware scans regularly.

I personally doubt this is a serious threat- the person sounds a bit amateur. Nevertheless, be on the look out for the next couple of weeks, and check especially alerts from your firewall. Any other developments, post back or PM me ASAP.

Just someone showing off. You don't brag that your about to steal someones bank details; that gets you arrested. Nor do you let on that you're going to do it that sorta ruins the point.

Do as the dude above says and just change your passwords and watch who you talk to in future.

As long as you don't have your router set to allow connections from off of your network, you don't have a problem. Plus, 'hacking' with an iPod / iPhone isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. He's 100% ******* except for knowing your IP address.

On a side note, it's wise to have a good password on your router, including a non-default username.

Most routers nowadays have you choose a username while the old routers would normally have the default username as admin or just blank.

Basically if you have any security on your router you should be fine. I'm pretty sure routers always have connections from off the network your networks to be denied automatically. You should be fine really. To be honest it was probably some kid that just figured out how to find out other peoples IP's and he thinks he's pretty cool =/

Honestly, just turn the router off for a few hours then turn it back on. New IP. New day.
