What games should I get for my new pc? I want games that are fast paced and can be played online.
These are the specs for the new family computer:

-Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 Quad-Core Socket LGA775, 2.66 GHz
-64 bit Vista
-ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB graphics card
- 4GB RAM
-Asus P5Q Socket 775 Intel P45 + ICH10R Chipset Dual-Channel DDR2 1200 / 1066 /
800 / 667 6x SATA 3.0Gb/s 8-channel High Definition Audio 1x PCI-E x16 Firewire 12x
USB 2.0
What the last one means I don't know but it looks fairly important (I'm not the most tech savvy person).

You didn't list your RAM, but I'm assuming you have about 2-3GB or so.

Get:

World of Warcraft,
Call of Duty 4,
Counter-Strike: Source,
Call of Duty 2.

Those are pretty much all of my recommendations.

Any game developed by valve is greatly recommended. :) If you don't already have The Orange Box, you should get it!

The only valve game I wouldn't recommend right now is left 4 dead because it would be better to just hold off till l4d2 comes out this November.

Some other good PC games:
  • Call of Duty 4 (better than world at war IMO)
  • Fallout 3 (not online, but super long fun game)
  • GTA IV

At the least, don't forget about Half Life 2 Deathmatch for the weekly event. :D

Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty, fast paced online and will be massivly popular.

Like Mike said any games developed by Valve.

I highly suggest you to get Team Fortress 2 you'll defiantly get your money worth, other than that you can try Left 4 Dead, Half Life 2, Portal. You can also check out games by Blizzard other than WoW, they are still a great company which is loyal to its fans. Now would be a good time for you to try out Warcraft III, StarCraft, and Diablo series.

Halo would be nice. Still quite a following on the online servers. That's the only one I can think of that wasn't mentioned. Maybe Halo 2 as well.

Give Warhammer Online a try. It looks great on my new computer.

For an RTS either get Red Alert 3 or wait for Starcraft II to come out.

I'm into the Real-Time Strategy genres, so I would recommend any of the Total War series, Company of Heroes, and all of the Command and Conquer games.

All that he said, Except WoW. Consider also GTA IV(Online is way much fun), Fallout 3 and Halo(Any of them). For anything else, It's all depends of what you like. If you like strategy games, get a Blizzard game (NOT WOW!)

I've heard good comments about Guild Wars too.

Don't forget Rome: Total War and all the Command and Conquer games, either.

In terms of the MMORPG market, WoW would be your best bet.

WoW has both PvE and PvP content. while mainly focusing towards PvE, but it has a good mixture of both. Warhammer is aimed toward PvP content, with some PvE. Its a good game if PvP is more of your thing, but WoW has a lot of PvP content aswell.

Also remember the fact Blizzard (or Acti-Blizz) is a much larger company and can put out more updates consistantly. So theres more content for you to play with WoW, then Warhammer. And theres that WoW has the unique graphics feel, different from most MMO's.

Oh, then theres Aion which look promising and the visuals look astounding. Its not out yet, but it comes out soon, so you might wana check that out.

The Orange Box is a must have, the best boxed deal on games you can get anywhere IMO. The entire GTA series is fun on PC, just don't get San Andreas off of steam, it uses version 3.0, while all the multi player mod is only for 1.0/2.0. CoD4 is also a good one to pick up, along with Red Orchestra, Mount and Blade, Company of Heroes, Fallout 3, and if you want a game you can just toy around in, get Spore. There are a lot more I like on my shelf but don't feel like posting them all.
You can also try out a bunch of the Source mods that are out there, some of the aren't exactly polished but fun anyway.
I'm also a big fan of the ArmA series, but that is an acquired taste for most people.
