In the Runescape forums a while ago, I came across the forum depicting what would be a nightmare to read on the Jagex site. I read a number of annoyingly unthoughtful responses, and laughed at some really creative ones.
This is the one I added to the forum at the time:
-------
Greetings to all your skillers, far and wide.
As Runescape has been expanding, so has the number of players, members and non-members, and we are pleased to announce that we have broken the standing record of most created characters with the total level count expanding somewhere in the quintillions! Impressive!
However, because there are so many levels out there, the digits so as to store these levels have been starting to take up quite a bit of memory space, and we've been discussing how we can save that valuable space for future updates.
After much debate and consideration, we have decided to combine the skills of woodcutting, firemaking, and fletching into one lone skill called "wood-working". This skill allows you to perform the tasks one could do with these three skills at the given skill level as the original takes; it's just all combined so that training firemaking will help you fletch more, and so on.
To compensate for the immense number of ways to gain experience points, we have made each level take 10 times as much experience as necessary, with level 99 requiring an easily-achievable 130 million experience.
Lastly, because we know that it's the getting of the levels that makes Runescape fun rather than having them, we are starting all players off at level 1 wood-working, removing all the experience obtained in these three stats. This way, it will be a lot more fair for beginners to catch up with the ranks!
Happy wood-making, everyone!
In other news ...
We have done the exact same things to crafting, construction, and smithing (to make "material-handling"), farming and herblore ("plant-work"), runecrafting and magic ("runinating"), hunting and summoning ("animal-worker"), ranged and agility ("forestry"), and the four combat stats ("fighting")!
Have fun!

Let's see your creativity spur. What would be the most horrible of Runescape updates that would not only make you quit, but sue for the time you wasted on the good ol' days?
im not sure what would be the worse, it would take me days to think of it, but that would suck. also like the removeal of CastleWars would also suck since that was one of the reason I became a member years ago

November 26, 2007. The Grand Exchange: We know you used to love the free economy, but **** you, we're adding total Jagexian control anyway!
We realize this might upset some of you, but remember this update is all about *you*. We want to protect you from...uhh... real world traders! Yes, yes...
Oh, wait...

Like a caricature of a human being, like an abortion: he had become a "sinner," he was in a cage, one had imprisoned him behind nothing but sheer terrifying concepts... There he lay now, sick, miserable, filled with ill-will towards himself; full of hatred for the impulses toward life, full of suspicion of all that was still strong and happy. In short, a "Christian"... - Twighlight of the Idols
Within the next few weeks we will be making some huge changes to the way people get around in Runescape! In the past, many players have complained that the world of Gilenor just isn't big enough. Over the years, we have tried to expand the Runescape universe by adding new cities, dungeons, and areas, but we still received a wide variety of complaints on the size of the world. Finally we have realized the errors of our ways!
Beginning on January 1, 2009, teleporttion will be removed from Runescape! Instead of the mundane task of raising one's Magic level in order to teleport halfway across the world, players can now go on an adventure every time they want to go to a different city! Meet other travelers, encounter scary monsters, and do a little Fishing on your way from Canifis to Ardougne, or how about stop at the Varrock Inn before you set off on the long journey to Seers Village?
We hope that this will help players realize how big Runescape really is!
In other news...
Charter boats, Gnome flying, Tree Spirits, teleportation equipment (such as Rings of Dueling), Hot Air Ballons, and all other forms of "fast travel" will be removed from Runescape. You can view a complete list of removed features at www.runescape.com/tele-removal

Due to an enormous amount of complaints, we have decided to take action on the subject of hogging training areas once and for all.
It has come to our attention that people with higher level skills will go around training areas and take all the goods for themselves. The following training areas will be modified: mining areas - where higher level miners run around "stealing" rocks from other players, and woodcutting areas - where higher level woodcutters get all the logs. In order to solve this dilemma, players who are level 50 or higher in a certain skill will be confined to one tree or one rock per area. Once they begin mining at a rock or cutting a tree, they will be stuck at that rock/tree until they depart from the area for a time of 10 minutes or longer. However, other players who have a level of 50 or lower in the skill can still use the rock/tree that higher level players are confined to. Also, if there is more than one player confined at the same rock or tree, the time that one rock/tree takes to respawn will take 20 seconds longer with each extra person that is confined there. Lastly, only two 50+ people will be able to be in the same mining/woodcutting area at a time. You'll have to be patient if you want to train a skill!
We hope this update doesn't affect gameplay too harshly and gives lower level players an easier time getting their skills up.

Code:
You will be aware, from newsposts and this week's Development Diary, of real-world trading and the danger it poses to RuneScape. To solve this once and for all, we are tweaking what happens when you drop items, updating the trade system to warn you about unbalanced trades and planning a final adjustment to the trading system, in the first week of January.
We strongly advise you to read this week's Development Diary before this newspost, so that you can fully understand why we have made these vitally important changes.
Unbalanced Trade:
To remove real-world trading from RuneScape, we must stop the gold sellers' ability to function. We believe that the best and only way to do this will be to stop unbalanced trade.
We consider an unbalanced trade to be one that is not equivalent, with a trader receiving items that are much more valuable than those they are giving away. For example, a party hat traded for a bucket is quite obviously an unbalanced trade.
For a trade to be 'balanced', the total value of the items being given must be within 3,000gp of the items being received. For example you WOULD be allowed to trade an item worth 15,000gp for an item worth 17,000gp (because the DIFFERENCE is less than 3,000gp). You will be limited to a 3,000gp gain or loss every 15 minutes.
We are aware that many of you will want to prepare for this change. So, initially, we are just going to make the trade system WARN about unbalanced trades, but it will still allow the trade to go through. This seriously reduces any opportunities for scamming, but still gives you a chance to get used to how it works, organise your items, hand back borrowed stuff, and give Christmas presents. Then, in the first week of January, we will change it to simply not allow unbalanced trades outside of the 3,000gp limit. We will be reminding you when the January date approaches, so that you can be best prepared.
For certain categories of account (mostly new accounts) we are actually implementing the trade restriction immediately. This allows us to stop a large chunk of the cheating immediately, since most of the real-world traders are using new accounts due to their previous ones being banned. For the vast majority of players, the trade restriction will come into effect in the first week of January.
We'd like to reassure you that we plan to keep a thriving player-trading economy. We are certainly NOT planning to remove trading from the game! It's only very unbalanced trades which will be affected. You won't be forced to use the Grand Exchange to trade either, although that will remain a superb means of buying or selling any of your items.
The 3,000gp rule means that you can still help each other out by offering cheaper items for free. We are certainly not going to stop you giving a Fishing rod or an antipoison potion to those who need it or, indeed, offering inflated amounts for items you want in a hurry, within the 3,000gp limit.
This shouldn't overly affect legitimate players, as the aim is to make sure there is no reason to NEED to do an unbalanced trade (more on how we have tried to ensure this below). It stops the real-world traders dead, as there is no way they can make delivery of purchased gold/items any more. Our aim is to make gold-selling so difficult that gold sellers and farmers are forced to leave RuneScape forever.
For more information on unbalanced trade, please read the Knowledge Base article.
Covert Trades:
Any real-world trader will respond to the removal of unbalanced trade by investigating ways round it. They will be looking for alternative ways to transfer gold other than trading. We are one step ahead, however, and have already researched every possible means for them to do so and amended them over the past few months.
We have previously adjusted the Duel Arena, Party Room, shops, etc. to prevent them being used to covertly transfer purchased gold.
One way of covertly transferring gold has not been mentioned yet, and we have addressed it this month. By dropping an item - through death or just discarding it - a real-world trader was able to make an unbalanced trade.
For the removal of unbalanced trade to be successful we must, therefore, change the way that player-dropped items work.
Discarded Item Changes
One way to fix it would be to make all discarded items invisible to other players. After all, a real-world trader would find it difficult to offer another player a stack of gold if their customer could not see it, let alone pick it up!
We've not gone quite that far. Instead, we have decided to just limit the visible amount. When you discard items by dropping them on the floor, they will only become visible to other players if their market value is less than 3,000 coins. Items with a market value less than this will become visible to other players after a delay (like before) - unless you've already reached your limit of 3,000 coins worth of items on the floor in a 15 minute period. This doesn't prevent you from discarding unwanted items or picking them up again; the change only restricts the ability of other players to see your discarded stuff.
There are no restrictions to how many items you can drop and how many of them are visible to you - this is only a change to the way your discarded items appear to other players.
Items Dropped on Death Changes
For the same reasons as mentioned above, we have made changes to how items are dropped on death.
When you die, (unless in the Bounty Hunter area - more on this later), you will leave a temporary gravestone behind. While the gravestone remains, your dropped items will not despawn, giving you a bit of time to run back and collect them. Other players will not be able to see or take items from your gravestone.
Your friends can make your gravestone remain for longer, either by repairing it when it starts to crumble or by expending Prayer points to bless it. Your stone can be maintained this way for up to a maximum of an hour. This will give you more time to return and pick up from where you left off.
Please read the Knowledge Base article to find out more about gravestones and how to purchase a variety of gravestone types.
Previous Updates:
As mentioned before, we have already released several updates that have paved the way for this change. We've tried really, really hard to make sure that for everything affected by this week's changes, we have provided a replacement means of doing the same thing, which is at least as good.
On the left-hand side of the table below, you can see those activities that have been affected by this week's updates. On the right, we show those recent updates that allow you to continue performing that activity.
Popular activity New way of performing activity Helping other players train their skills Assist System Fighting other players to win their drops Bounty Hunter Fighting other players to win money Duel tournaments Fighting other players for fun and glory Duel Arena is now free, and also Clan Wars Trading items with other players Balanced trades OR the Grand Exchange Keeping an economy where the player determines the prices (based on supply and demand) Grand Exchange Looking after the items of a friend who has died Gravestones Sharing monster drops when fighting together LootShare Having enough room to store stuff, instead of getting your friend to hold it for you Extra bank space Hosting drop parties Using the party room which we moved to the free world for this purpose If there's anything you think that we've missed then please let us know on the Suggestions forum. We are confident we can stop the cheaters AND still create all of the types of gameplay you enjoy. It just requires a bit of creative thinking!
Oh woops, this has already been created. Here is the real one.
Chirstmas Event 2008
Happy holidays everybody! With the new update, you better have somebody to cheer you up.
This year's Christmas event will have Jack Frost in play. Normally Jack Frost's devious plans for this holiday are to just freeze some noobs and skillers, but somehow he got his hands on an energy source called the Power Freezer 2-500. This allows him to freeze the whole world including any character that is logged on for over 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, you will either freeze to death, or be thrown into a random event that is estimated to last for 10 hours. If you do not complete the random event within the 2 weeks given, you will restart your account on Tutorial Lumbridge and lose all your bank items.
Furthermore, if you choose not to participate in this update, the next time you log in after the update, you will be killed just like from the inadequate random event completion.
Happy Freezing!
Bug Fixes:
We were given information that people seemed to be healed from food. This has been fixed so food, depending on the calories, will kill you eventually from obesity or heart disease.
Some people were able to raise skills. This has been fixed.
Everybody seemed to be able to fly around all of RS with level 99 flying that is a secret skill. This has been removed, but we forgot to back it up so we have to start over. Because of the whiners, we will make it crappy and buggy to get it on time in February.
