Yeah, so this is my first signature EVER! Well, I made my 'Lennon' signature, but I just drew it on paper, took a picture of it, and added the writing on the computer so I don't really think that counts. Anyway, it's 4:30am here and I'm not sure why I'm up doing this. I'm not tired though and extremely bored so I decided I'd have a go at the whole signature making thing.

It's Sylar from the TV show 'Heroes'

Stock

Here's my criticism:
I don't like the line on his neck, but that's glass from the picture and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it. I almost think I faded his head out too much. Above and below the writing is a bit bland but I spent FOREVER trying to add something to it but everything always looked bad so I gave up XD

I knew you could do it ;)

Looks great, I love it. Sylar is well blended, and not to mention the fact that you chose someone off Heroes!!! :)

Well done. :D 9/10 I'd agree with the blankness you commented on and I know what you mean when you can't figure something to go there.

I watch heros too, but it all got way too complicated after series 1 imo. Oh yeah but the signature, really not bad for a first. Especially if you used a stock, using stocks in signatures can be a little difficult due to the limited amounts of things you can do with them (like for instance putting anything behind the main figure easily) and you have done well here I think. Just a few things to point out:
-next time, use a better quality stock :B (stockhouse has loads of good sized and HQ stocks)
-shading looks **** up. :)
-the right side of the sig looks a bit blank. If you had those swirls (or smoke?) that are around sylar go across and wrap around the text or something, I dunno.

But way better than my sig! (i guess partly because I made it in photoshop 4..)

Your sig is awsome for the first time. Just that I don't know who Sylar is lol.

I think this is a good idea with the smoke thing, but I think it may be abit difficult for you to do - seeing as it's your first - i've been doing them for a while and I don't think I can do it. Just do a simple brush on the right and it should look better.

Well, I could make a list of things to fix but I'm not really sure one's helpful in this case. You did a decent job mechanics-wise (no white edges around the render or anything sloppy like that), but the style needs a lot of help. Usually, when people want to use a photo of someone, they cut them out of the background and repaste them onto a new one. What looks most wrong in this sig is that you left the background in and used the eraser to feather the edges. It looks out of place like that. The background and the text match each other fine, but they really don't match the render. Try to coordinate all three so they co-exist better.

Either way, what matters most with self-made signatures is that you like them. If you want criticism though, I'd suggest that you take a look at some of the techniques used by other sig-makers that you like and put your own spin on things. Brushes help, but aren't a must.

Not a bad start though.

Yeah, I'm pretty bad with computer oriented art. [Which is why my signature is an actual drawing of mine] Even that is sloppy though, but I like it like that.

Experimenting with Photoshop is fun and I'd rather learn how to use it by myself rather than learn from tutorials. [So that is why the techniques were so terrible XD]

But yeah, thanks for the help

Agreed about tutorials. I see a lot of tutorial sigs posted and they make me cringe. There really is no right or wrong way to make a sig and when people make an instruction guide on how to make one..well..it's just blah. What I meant was that if you see a style you like, try it out for yourself. Doing different styles (grunge, vector-ish, dark, surreal, etc) really helped me learn how to make different effects and that ultimately made me better at using Photoshop.
