I'm having a problem with audio on my computer where my soundcard is acting as a mic and playing back my output sound. I think it started when I switched the recording channel on Audacity from Mono to Stereo. However, changing it back to Mono has no effect. How do I fix this and get it back to normal?

My mic will still work if I plug it in, but the output sound will still continue to be heard from the other end of a phone conversation.

This computer's running Windows XP with a Realtek sound card.

Does your computer have a built in microphone somewhere? (The monitor is a common location, you can tell by looking at your monitor cable, if it has a wire coming out of it then you do otherwise you don't)

Did you un-mute your microphone output when you were working in audacity? (Open your volume control to check by double clicking on the speaker in your system tray or finding it through the start menu and then look at the "microphone" slider, If it doesn't show up then click on Options->Properties look below "Show the following volume controls:" and select the controls you would like, namely "Microphone")

You mean it sounds like the echo you occasionally hear on the phone? That means your volume is too loud or your microphone is too sensitive, if you have a set of headphones (or can get your hands on someone else) then try plugging those in and then test again with the microphone, do you still hear the echo?

No it's not an echo - I have my headset plugged in. My volume is fine, and I don't think it has a built in mic because this never happened before.

What people hear in a phone conversation is pretty much themself exactly as I hear it - my computer playsback the output sound that I hear to them. I don't really know what the techy way is to describe it =x so that's the best I can do.

I have never had this problem before and I doubt that changing something in Audacity would change something on your computer but lets see whats in Audacities preferences.

Open Audacity and then click on File->Preferences and then click on the 'Audio I/O' tab, Check these settings to make sure they are correct, You may also want to make sure that "Play other tracks while recording new one" is unchecked.

I don't know what else you may want to check, try searching on Google.
