I'm no good at string instruments. Pianos and music keyboards are for me!

I've been playing the electric and acoustic guitar for about 3 years now or just over so it's guitar for me.

Can you shred? I really want to i Just lack the speed to do it right now.

When I can shred, I'm acually going to be more into trying to do Neoclassical stuff than trying to figure out Iron Maiden solos.

3 years is far from shredding. Trust me, I've been playing for almost 3 years, not even close. :[ Gonna be more like 5 till shreddin' :]

What? I know people who could shred in as little as like a year and a half to two years. Of course those with 10+ years experiance under their belt are insane shredders. But even those who "picked" up shredding (no pun intend) so fast are pretty good at it.

Wait, what do you mean by "Shredding"? Like fast solos? Or really fast picking? And If number 1, then those people probally are intent on learning to shred. I just want to play guitar. I'm not doing shredding exercises, or anything like that. When I get to shredding, I'll learn it. That simple.

This is properly done shredding. Yeah it's mostly just speed picking and its very technical.

http://www.expertvillage.com/video/1690_metal-shredding.htm

He shreds near the end of the video.

All i see is scales there.

Jessica, "Shredding" isn't a technique. It's a very, very vague term for a collection of things that are commonly used in metal ie tremolo picking etc.

Same here, been playing piano for 3 years. If I had a choice, I'd probably go with guitar, but bass sounds interesting since it seems to be less common .. wouldn't mind either. Won't crack a guitar hero joke #-o

If you can define shred, and it's possible on a bass, probably.
