Coming from a bassist that's a load of balls. It's going to be painful whichever you play, you're going to get blisters and such and it will hurt, but after a few months you'll develop callus and it wont hurt anymore. You get used to it.
I started learning bass without knowing how to play guitar, i've never taken lessons and i'm one of the better bassists i know. Not the best, but better than quite a few. Taking lessons will definately help, though. After a certain stage it more or less becomes integral to know musical theory and such for composition and to be able to progress.
