Quick Chat:

This week brings the Quick Chat system - an optional method for chatting to players in RuneScape.

You may activate the Quick Chat system by clicking on your name in the chat window or the speech bubble next to it. This brings up the Quick Chat menu, which replaces your chat window. You may revert to the normal chat system at any time by pressing 'Esc' or the 'X' in the top-left corner.

The Quick Chat menu houses a list of requests, responses, greetings and other commonly-used sentences. You can choose from these by selecting them with your mouse or via shortcut keys. Once you have made your selection, your character will say your chosen chat option.

In some areas of RuneScape, you can press 'F10' to bring up 'context-sensitive' chat. This is a list of chat options that varies according to where you are or what you are training. You can then use this menu to talk about subjects related to the area or activity. We expect this to be particularly helpful in those situations where you need to give team directions: in minigames like Castle Wars and Pest Control, for example, you will be able to suggest tactics at the touch of a few buttons.

We have also made Quick Chat available to muted players. We believe that this is a more suitable action to take against those who have previously abused the chat system. Additionally, Quick Chat can be used to chat with players on German worlds, since the system will translate whichever chat option you choose.

Due to the nature of Quick Chat, we cannot entirely predict how players will use it or what players will want from it. So, we would encourage any feedback that you have, to help us tailor the system to your chatting needs. To offer feedback, please post on the official Quick Chat thread in the Suggestions Forum.

As we mentioned in this month's Behind the Scenes, Quick Chat is optional and an alternative to conventional chatting.
Changes to the 'F' keys:

Quick Chat brings some slight alterations to the handy shortcut keys:

* F4 now opens your inventory (which was previously 'Escape').
* F9 opens the quick responses of your Quick Chat menu.
* F10 opens the context-sensitive menus of your Quick Chat menu.
* F11 repeats the last phrase you said using the Quick Chat menu.

I give it a 4/5. It's in an ugly place, and it's slower than talking, but the repeat command could be nice, muted people will be able to talk a bit, and the grammar of the Runescape community will surely improve.

I find it hard to believe that scrolling through the list of possible sayings is faster than actually typing, though there may be someone lazy enough to not want to type..

It is nice for the muted people to finally be able to somewhat converse with others, and I'm sure they will enjoy this quite a bit. I wonder if Jagex will allow them to say "I am muted", so they won't be looked at strangely for always replying with the new interface.

3/5 = Meh....

Another new gadget that wont be used. And in reguards to muted players, why should they be given a means to communicate? Didn't they lose that right by proving that they couldn't handle that right in the first place?

If you get used to the hotkeys then it's fine. I find hitting f9 a lot easier than saying my level every 5 minutes. It seems this update was made for muted players instead of players who can talk. (which is why most people aren't pleased with this update)

It could do with some updating. for example, removing the quick chat button and just having a hotkey to open it.

I'd rate this a 4/5

I gave it a 3/5.It's a good idea in theory, but typing is faster and all of the people just saying random things with it(spamming) gets REALLY annoying. It's great for muted people though, they can actually communicate a bit now.
In the long one,I don't think anyone will use it.

1/5 terrible update imo. Slower than typing if you can type okley and do muted people really deserve to be able to talk? They lost that right already...

Seems a way that Jagex can bring in younger audiences who can't really type.

Like others I question why those muted should be able to have any say at all.

Overall though not really necessary.

For the people saying that muted people should stay muted, keep in mind that they can't really carry on any conversations besides what's available to them in quick chat, which isn't really anything besides skill levels, selling items.and random battle comments. It's not that much.^.^

3/5 from me.

Muted players can talk, but it makes too many spam sandwiches.

Seems Jagex realized that their team of monkeys are only hitting the "Deny" button for appeals.

Yeah, once you're permanently muted unfairly, you most likely wont have your appeal accepted.

So many things are wrong with the chat. XD Why can I say I'm buying untradeable items? Why can I buy hot girls (I guess a way to get a gf in RS without getting banned :?)? Why can I buy a 9mm revolver? Why can I buy a mobile phone?

About mobile phones, my friend was once permanently muted for saying "Brb nmr, someones calling me, need to answer my calling device" to me in public. Someone reported him for censor evasion, probably to get rid of the scum that is ruining RS.

It isn't something I would use, but I'm pretty sure my perm banned former friend will be happy about this. I will have to give them credit. 3/5.

Most of the people using it are just throwing up random stupid lines trying to be cute. So it seems they have basically invented a spam machine. Maybe in time, as the novelty wears off, people will get away from the idiotic random banter.
