I am getting a new computer in a few months ( i gotta save up first :D )
I have decided I would like a Dell Xps.
I fiddled around with the setting and got a price of around £650
Here are the settings :
PROCESSOR XPS 420 Viiv E8400 Core 2 Duo Processor (3.00GHz, 6MB, 1333MHz)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium - English
MEMORY 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
HARD DRIVE 500GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA/100 Hard Drive with 16MB DataBurst™ cache
GRAPHICS CARD SINGLE 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT card
OPTICAL DRIVE DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD)
KEYBOARD Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard - UK & Ireland
MOUSE Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse
SOUND SOFTWARE Integrated HDA 7.1 Dolby Digital Audio
SPEAKERS Dell™ A525 Speakers with Subwoofer
FLOPPY/MEDIA DRIVES 19-in-1 Bluetooth Media Card Reader
MICROSOFT SOFTWARE Microsoft® Works 9 - English

I was wondering whether you think I should change anything. Here is the link where you can change the settings around: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstor ... 14&rbc=D04X414&s=dhs
Could you try and keep it around £675 although £700 is the maximum.

Thanks Alot
Kenny

not to bash this, you know you can build your own computer cheaper? And get better stats than factory built.

Not really anymore. Once you factor in the OS licensee and time constraints. The only time I recomend building your own now is if you're interested in hardware and/or want to pick specialty parts.

If it'll be more than a month until you have the money I'd wait. You could get a better deal. Dell is pretty much the way to go if you don't want a ginormous amount of bloatware shipped with it.

Ermm yeah, it will be two or three months. I really don't know enough about computers to build my own. By the way does building your own computer mean, buying all the parts then putting them together yourself, or telling them exactly what parts to put in ?
Thanks Kenny

I agree completely. Tons of benefits of factory built include warranty, price, quality, compatibility, time efficient, etc...

Well to some computer gurus its easy to build their own, on the other hand factory direct is also a way to go for some people, For the past year, I've been building and modifying my own computer systems, I like it but for other some like it some don't. But another thing is that that you can build high performance system on yourself usually cheaper than buying from factory.

I'd like to see you back up your claims with some proof for once, and just how many computers have you built in the "past year"?

Yes, it can be cheaper to build your own computer, but the advantage isn't as great as it used to be anymore.

Top manufacturers overprice their top-of-the-line systems quite a bit, but if you are buying a medium-high level system like this one, it can be hard to compete with the large discounts on hardware they get for buying large ammounts of it.

With buying a system you get some other advantages such as warrenty and support as well, something which may be better for someone who has never built their own system before.

Kenny, that system looks good, but if you aren't going to be getting it for a few months there might be something a bit better for the same price by then.

Yeah I agree.. It really isnt any cheaper to build our own.. In my case it was more expensive to build my own. I just did it becasue i was interested in building computer.

And eyah Kenny, the XPS are really good gaming machines,

Yes, for some people its better to build and for some its better to buy pre-built... Thats just the way it is... If computers is something you're interested in, then go for it! Do a bit of research! Building computers is actually not as hard as most might think.. It can also be very a very educational and fun experience.

Btw... When building computers: A lot of the actual parts you buy have quite long warranties (most graphics cards have lifetime warranties!) and also you do have support when it comes to building, its just that your support is spread thin among different companies ;-)

2 computers, 1 in my HP box with upgraded parts but with leftover memory tower, and one with upgraded parts. these builds mostly have new parts I.E mobo, and processor, fans, everything else is stock such as memory, and hard drives...I've never built a pc from scratch for myself...however I rebuild my own systems.

But upgrading a computer is not the same as building your own... of corse upgrading is cheap...

Cd drive - range from 25-65 bucks
HDD - 250 Gb is 125 bucks
RAM - DDR - 1g - 45 bucks DDR2 1 gig - 25

aDid you use the same OS??

So you saved 125+35(go with middle) and assuming your usinjg ddr2 +25 bucks = 185 dollars.
THEN if you bought a new OS that is a hundered dollars...

Then you gotta add in shipping, which is 25 dollars ish

Really your dont save money lol

If you bought the other parts new, then u got a MB+CPU+Case+Powersupply??

I am assuming you went with barebones...

So that cost like 200 dollars...

So if you just bought a bare bones without OS of corse it is cheaper, but htat isnt really building your own computer

In our house we have my computer, parts bought and set-up built by myself and my computer guru friend; my husband has an off-the-shelf package.

I like mine better (of course  )

But I have to agree it is now usually cheaper to buy an off-the shelf or off-the-net product. I would recommend making sure the motherboard has expansion slots so you can upgrade, one reason for my building was that the motherboards on bought set-ups rarely had any expansion slots at all. Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it, although it was a great sense of achievement to build my own. Upgrading once you have a good set-up is less expensive than new and more fun.

I thought your spec. looked quite good.
