Personally, I believe suspension would be quite painful.
First, they pierce your back, knees, shoulders, or other places depending on the type of suspension.

Then, you are lifted up on the hooks a few feet off the ground. You have to hope that the people that put the hooks in you knew what they were doing, as the skin could rip or you could go into shock if the hooks are not right.

Once I watched a national geographic show called "Taboo", it showed this body suspension and other painful things. Two of the more memorable ones were some tribal rituals for young men coming of age. One tribe had teenage boys wearing gloves full of ants with one of the most painful insect stings in the world. They had to keep these gloves on their hands for a specific amount of time. Afterwards, the hands were numb and swollen for a few days. Another tribe had men with razor blades slicing into the skin of their young men thousands of times, to scar them. After the painful healing process, the boys had skin patterns like that of an alligator.
