I'm rather glad It could actually happen in my life time, i wonder if they'll be able to broadcast it on the tv like the first moon landing. :P

Certainly going to be an exciting moment, if they can pull it off.

So, what? 30-40 years? Sweeet. I wonder if we'll -ever- manage to land on the other planets. Of course that'll be far, far into the future.

I can imagine all the stupid conspiracy theories already. :P

Yer I don't think landing on any of the gas planets would be possible, unfortunately. A shame, considering my favourite has to be Saturn >.>

... Don't ask me -why- I have a favourite planet, I just do. ^_^

Frankly, I'm going to go with the nerdy Star Trek belief that NASA won't be the ones to ultimately push towards the innovation of space travel. I feel like it'll take private funds in order to accomplish this since they're free from the hoop-jumps that politics forces government agencies to do.

But more on-topic.. Wow, Mars. So what? We've learned that there's frozen water on it. I feel sort of spoiled that I don't find things like this impressive. We have to start somewhere and I hope this is a step in the right direction.

Where theres water there could be some form of life. Could be our first contact with an alien@@

Probably one we can't see or do anything with BUT ALIENS MQ ALIENS@@

If we can get as far as mars, well, it's a big step. When was the first moon landing? How many years ago was it?

1969, I believe.

I don't know if I'd be that overjoyed about bacteria. It'd be interesting to see how different they are from earth life though.

Going to the moon again is important, going to mars is important.

The moon mission will pave the way for the mars mission and the mars mission will pave the way for missions beyond.

The goal is to be back at the moon by 2020 and on mars by 2030. I've read various reports that they may have found an extrasolar planet that is much like earth. Personally I'm betting that by the year 2100 we'll be able to go to other solar systems if need be.

We know that there's evidence of recent water ice on Mars, milllions of years ago Venus was much like earth. So if water can exist three times in our solar system? Why not anywhere else. It'll also give life beyond our world a greater chance if we can prove that life started more than once in our own backyard.

This stuff all really excites me... I have a dashboard widget that shows the number of extrasolar planets confirmed and what type the newest one is.

That's astronomy you're talking about. Astrology has nothing to do with science. It'd probably be what I'd do if I didn't do computing science.

Here's some more info about how it would work: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/20 ... merge.html

Down to the procedure of going there and how long it would take. Surfaced on digg about 6 days ago.
