Absolutely unacceptable. I see a lot of reports like this actually, i think that there must be a lot of under educated police officers out there, though I don't think they'd teach common sense in a school, using a taser on a 82 year old woman is a particularly foolish thing to do. I obviously wasn't there but I somehow doubt she was much of a threat.

Just get behind her and disarm her? Much easier than causing the woman to have a stroke, and giving the family grief.

I'd think tasing her would be easier. I'm sure you mean't a more appropriate way. :P

If your a police officer I'm sure your speed is quick enough to dodge an 82 year old womens swing. Just let her miss then grab her and restrain her. No taser needed...

That's really mean but it's better than getting hammered.

Pfft. That's just because Alex hates old people.

The lady was senile, doesn't give them a reason to do that to her.

Him ''Hating'' old people doesn't have anything to do with what he said...

He just meant that Ryan's choice of word wasn't very accurate in his statement. In fact, it is easier to tase the woman. However, it is more appropriate to do what Ryan said. :)

Please. You can't grab her cause the newspapers would claim assault, say they "violently handled her".

You can't cuff her either. I don't blame a police officer for tasering an armed person it's there life on the line, it's easier to sit back and criticize now and I'm usually the first to leap on the OMG TRIGGER HAPPY AMERICAN POLICE bandwagon but an armed person, no matter how old is a risk.

You don't know how fast this lady was swinging it about it's not as if a hammer is massively heavy i'd say she could swing it about pretty fast.

Come on, an 82year old comes at you with a hammer, don't you think that it would be reasonable just to get out of the way and restrain here. Those tasers can have side affects, especially on elderly, I certainly hope that the police know that otherwise they should not carry them.

Creepy, you read my mind. Perhaps I'm a bit biased when it comes to police "brutality" situations like this one, because my dad's a detective, but I think that if someone is swinging a hammer at me, I'd like to keep the hammer away. And as much as you can say "A POLICE OFFICER SHOULD BE FIT AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO USE A WEAPON ON AN OLD WOMAN", my buddy's grandma got in a rollover car accident at the age of 79, lived, and is still quite active for a woman of her age. So, that could have been a more lively 82 year old.

If someone's charging at you with a weapon, is your first instinct to dodge the weapon and hold them back? If I had a taser, I'd use it. I don't care how old you are, I'm not going to let you bash my head in while I think of the most efficient way to deal with it.

Although, I don't know how fast it happened, or how it happened. Other tactics could of been used, but it depends on the situation.

I was also thinking...I mean if they actually REALLY did need to tase her, I've been tasered before at my friends house with a rigged taser that made it hurt even more. And even with that it really didnt hurt all that much. Just that spot was kinda numb for 20min XD

If someone is running at by with a hammer, I whip out my tazer and drop 'em.

I come first. Don't want to be tazed? Don't come at me and DON'T LET MENTALLY INSANE PEOPLE LIVE OUTSIDE OF AN INSANE ASYLUM!

And the entire report was biest.

Quote:
Unless an 82-year-old grandmother is holding a loaded gun, there's no excuse for police officers to use a Taser.

None.

Quote:
Last week, the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Johnson's death "accidental" and blamed cocaine intoxication rather than the Taser.
