Belarussians speak Russian. Many, especially in the country, speak mixed language. Very few actually speak Belarussian language. Unfortunately, this language is almost dead.
I agree with you that Belarus are far less democratic than Russia, I am just saying that Russia is making steps similar to what was done in Belarus.

Belarus is more of a success in dictatorship because of its size. Today, the comforts that capitalism has brought Russia have only just started benefiting people when communism collapsed years ago. I can't speak for all Russians in saying this, but most understand that a free market system has allowed for the rise in standard of living, not Putin. Many Russians have a love/hate relationship with him. As I've said, he is the best they can get, but many know about serious allegations of corruption against his administration. The doubt in itself is too severe to allow the willing acceptance of a dictatorship. There has not been an event initiated by Putin that has instilled absolute trust in him yet.

Personally I love seeing someone stand up to America and the other countries who're having fun telling the world how to act. Putin isn't stupid, obviously. He's pushing the boundaries but he's not going to bring back communism or do anything too drastic; Like someone said - There are many countries who wouldn't accept that and step in.

Well, I guess we'll see when the elections come. I'd be happy if my suspicions do not materialize.

Just one more thing to ponder about: Yes, Putin officially said he won't try to stay for the third term (it is against the constitution), but can you imagine anyone even raising this question in a truly democratic country?

Excuse me, I'm not good at giving an oratio in English, but I'll try

Ok, one, Putin (nice word in french^^) want to follow the constitution by stepping down after this term.
Kristina, admit, capitalism only makes rich people richer and poor people poorer. Communism was good for the middle class, when it collapsed, everyone started to loot the country, literally, making themself rich.
In my town we had this engine factory, Melitopolskij Motornij Zavod, they had back then most modern machines, like computerised lathes and everything. When communism was gone, they were sold to Germany and now the factory is almost dead.
Don't tell me Russians don't want communism back, because like 85% of them are struggling to survive and longing for a change and Putin is bringin it (Lukoil CEO enprisonment?). The majority of people want Putin to be up for fourth term, by the way.
I think world needs a reformation.

Because Russia did a complete change in government in a relatively short time, you can only expect that things will get worse before they get better. The fact is, communism will never be able to be successfully administered in Russia. Capitalism at least gives way for social mobility of the middle class, which is finally beginning to grow in Russia. It will be the children of these politicians who will cause major changes in the quality of lives for Russians, not the current administration.

One question MQ, have you ever returned to where you were born?
If you did, you'd be talking different.

Uh, I visit family every other year in Russia so I don't see your point.
