Uhh, you've obviously didn't take a tutorial for that one, right? Look, when you'll feel more experienced and had taken a good ammount of tutorials and you know that the result won't come out bad, then it's a good time to begin to experiment. The background's way too smooth, I think you've excessed with the effect, and the stroke in your text doesn't match the signature itself. So, don't experiment for now. Take tutorials, they're harmless.

You know what? I had a completely opposite way of learning. I said to hell with tutorials and just experimented. It's more fun when you're not looking at a manual on how to make a sig. It really is. Sure, you can look at tuts to learn how to use a programme..but there is no tut that can teach you how to be creative.

Thats what I did. I only ever used/use tutorials when I know exactly what I want to create and I dont know how to do it myself. Eventually I learn/learned what creates these effects and I dont/didnt need to use them any more.

Anyway, speaking abotu the sig.

I wouldnt use the liquify tool that much. I use it every now and then in photo manips, like in one I was working on a while back the teeth of the model looked 'ugly', so I liquified them to line up with the rest of the teeth.

Since you're new at this, like others have said, I would experiment with everything.

You two are photomanipulators. He's attempting at signature making. These two are two different things, except both of them are rubrics in design.

I chose an example in photo manipulation so it was easier to understand what the liquify tool is used for - i.e. minor changes.

But you are... okay, let's put this in another way: you both are digital artists. He attempts to become a signature maker. How can you make a digital artist out of a future signature maker? :P

I dont get you, if he's using digital programs to make the sigs, then he's creating digital art anyway, even if he's making a sig..

Forget it, you've seen what was the result of his experiment. I insist that the punishment would be taking tutorials to the rest of his life. XD

I agree with Anubis. I only use tutorials when I need to find out how to do something I have no dea how to do, or when I forget how to do something. I am not familiar with Photoshop, I just use Gimp. Therefore I really cannot give a lot of direction on where to go from here. But I would start with something simple, like grunge, then move up to abstract, tech, no brush/render, animation, etc. Maybe even make your own brushes, if you don't like the ones you find.

Precisely!
It may take a while, but originality is everything. That was one reason why Neo's sig wasn't the winner of the SOTW this week. It looked stunning but the tutorial used for it was just too common.
