I just use the windows firewall and it works fine. I never get anything bad anymore. I also have Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta, that combination with the windows firewall keeps me computer free of pretty much everything. I haven't had a problem since I started this one.

If you are behind a router, you should not need a software firewall providing you are not using DMZ. If you are behind a router and want more protection, just use the windows one.
I use zone alarm and don't have any problems. Don't use any norton firewall. They can really hurt performance. Norton AV is ok though. So, either router and windows firewall or just zone alarm(sygate).
That would be your best bet or go back to sygate if you can't fix zone alarm.

I use ZA. here is what u do.
Go under programm controll and set BOTH settings for medium.
The go to Firewall and for the SECOND one (interent trusted zones ) select medium.
That should fix it = )
