I saw a Smosh video called «FPS sucks» and it made me realise that a large majority of games are now First Person Shooters. They only game that people talk about nowdays are Call of Duty, Halo or Mass Effect.
Frankly, I'm tired of seeing only shooting games in stores or the 15th sequel of the same franchise (Yes, I'm looking at you CoD.)

I mean, why there is no more games like Banjo, Super Mario 64, etc. It was creative, original and enjoyable. And am I the only one who think that old FPS were better than they are now. Personally, I'd choose either Goldeneye 64 or Unreal Tournament PS2 over any CoD game. They have better graphisms nowdays yes, but before you could barely see any pure copy 'n' paste sequels.
Resident Evil, 007 Games in general, Extermination, GTA games, Batman Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed. Thoses are freaking brillant games, why can't we have more game like these?

Anyone else think that FPS game takes too much space? Or that gaming industry is going downhill?

Well the industry is doing great.

People will buy games no matter what. They are addicted.

So there will always be a demand for decent games.

However, because of this, publishers are now in it for the money alone, and not for creating a quality product. Now Treyarch and Infinity Ward are ****** under the command of Activision's pimp hand, and Bungie is going to be the same way. Just an example.

So in that sense, yes, gaming itself is going downhill, but the industry is booming.

I agree it's going downhill. At least, downhill in the sense that FPS continues to dominate the market. The 64 era came and went without being truly appreciated for the games that came out of it. Back in the day, it wasn't just about the FPS. You had racing games, sports games, puzzle games, RPGs, RTSs, simulation games, adventure games, etc. The list goes on and on. But now, this generation has become fixed on FPS since it's always changing (and when I say changing, I mean the same graphics/weapons/tactics are used, but in a "newer/later" version). We have hit a peak with graphics and have left behind story telling and plot. What the gaming industry needs are english majors, screen writers, people who know the elements of telling a good story and creating one. Not only that, we need imaginative people to come up with new challenges that will grab people's attention. I think most people are tired of the same old FPS style of game play that's coming out all the time. People are willing to play something that's new and exciting. Companies need to jump off the FPS bandwagon and focus on making creative games that will appeal to those of us who don't enjoy FPS anymore.

Oh, you left out Portal by the way, Batman. That is a good game, too.

I'm not a gamer.. but when I watched E3 this year.. I notice there are few "new" games.. mostly sequels..

Call of Duty 20 1/2
Halo 3D 9
Modern Recall 15 3/4...

It's all sequels.. I'd like to see more original games. This is why I no longer even own a system. I'd have more fun playing with sticks and stones..
then the same game repackaged with some updates for the 10th time.

Battlefield 3 and Saints Row 3 were the only sequels that seemed to be improved much.

The Mass Effect series is a third person shooter/RPG hybrid, hardly the worthy inclusion to your list there. :P

However I do agree. I love the simplicity that older games from the 90s and early 00s had.

Naw. It's just edging more and more towards the mainstream. Which means games need to mass appeal more so they dumb the content down and you get call of duty 3. Start at point A and go to point B. Kill everything on the way. Repeat for 12 missions.

But theres still games out there that do it differently. And if you look hard enough you can find other genres outside of shooters. In fact you really don't even have to look hard. Theres plenty of stuff out there.

I think it's hard to compare Mass Effect to an FPS. It has some elements of an FPS, but it isn't an FPS, so it's fair to not call it one. It's far more creative and expansive. Third person shooter Gears of War would probably be closer to an FPS than Mass Effect.

like creepy said there is still alot of quality non-FPS games out there, you just sorta have to wear blinders to get past the advertising dollars that the now mainstream big name FPS companys and actually look thru the shelves at a game store to find any. it's rather sad when i get asked if im a gamer, reply with a yes and they start blathering on, about COD, like they know all about gaming cause they've played 2 - 3 COD games now.

Wasn't 007 Nightfire a FPS?

FPS genre is fine. Stuff like paid DLC, no mod support, no dedi server support (for multiplayer games above 4 players), and intrusive DRM are undermining the gaming industry.

So? Nightfire and all 007 games are the perfect combination of FPS AND Spying game. It's not all about kill at that moves and make it to the goal point.
I just bought 007 Quantum and frankly, it's mainly a FPS yes, however I have to be very sneaky at sometimes and I must use strategy to not get seen by cameras. I have to hide at safe spot to not get easily owned with 4 gun shots. In others 007 games, you sometimes have pursuits, use of technology and gadgets. Generic FPS aren't like that, you just have to shoot, shoot and shoot again until no one is left.

And they were no Bond games released that were pure copy 'n' paste of the previous game with 2-3 minors differences that could have been easily used as DLC. Just for that, I respect them.
