BREAKING: Team Fortress 2 is now free to play “forever”

Industry trade website Develop-Online has revealed in an interview with Valve’s Robin Walker that Team Fortress 2 is now permanently free to play, and will solely be supported by in-game item purchases.

TF2′s switch to F2P was rumored and expected, but perhaps not this soon. Walker says that Valve had been exploring the idea since September 2010. “We’ve been toying with the idea of making Team Fortress free-to-play ever since the Mann-conomy update,” Walker said. “The data we got back from that update leads us to believe that TF2 would be more successful as a completely free product.” Read the rest of the interview with Walker at Develop-Online.

Prior to today, Team Fortress 2 was in the middle of a “free week.” The game’s Über Update should deploy later this evening.

Video was pretty cool, too. Sad that I paid for the game. But in truth, it was well worth it. Now, it's probably one of the greatest free-to-play games out there.

Woot! Was going to post this too, but seeing as you already covered it..

Glad to see it happen, especially on the PC. If we get flooded with a ton of asshats, we've got the ability to start banning people from various servers.

Good to see them going a new direction. Now everyone will be able to freely enjoy TF2.

A free to play game. From Valve. And it's TF2.
It also has dedicated servers.

Today is a good day.

Also those who bought the game previously or got it for free and bought anything from the Mann Co. store gets "premium status".

Those who currently own TF2 or goes and buys a boxed copy of it will receive a special hat, which looks like a flatter version of the Soldier's default helmet.

Edit: Meet the Medic is great. Probably my most favorite so far.

300+ Hours clocked up on that game. :oops:

What i like the most about it is the support classes. A lot of games sorta throw them to the side. You look at BC2 and it has a medic in it but your mostly killing dudes you can't REALLY go through the whole game just throwing out health packs and get a good score. You can play a medic in TF2, not kill a soul and be top on the scoreboards.

Engineer + medic are like my two top played classes i think. Love the cat and mouse game with spys. It's nice that those that bought it get some bonuses over those that didn't. Nice of them to think of us even if i did only pay like a tenner for it and like i said..got 300+ hours out of it.

Never played TF2 but apparently from all your post it sounds like an amazing game so i guess ill check it out... its free after all ;D

You can't truly appreciate how complex this game has become if you jumped on board before the class updates and all that jazz but these (funny! But also sad in some ways..ok there just funny.) videos help you feel for new players a bit;
