Taken from my own forum post on Bluelight Dev, with some variations for this forum.
Main Question: What do you think about this?

From Wikipedia (Mechscape Article):
Quoted from the Mechscape Wikipedia Article, first paragraph:

Quote:
MechScape was cancelled on 29 October 2009[1], rendering much of the following obsolete. However, Mark Gerhard, Jagex's CEO, has said that "much of the game – including its engine – will be reused in the new secret project the Jagex development team is now working on."

Now, the article from gamesindustry.biz :
Quote:
Decision to cancel MechScape costs Jagex "tens of millions"

Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard has confirmed that RuneScape successor MechScape has been canned just prior to its release.

The decision, he told GamesIndustry.biz, was made in August when the assembled game failed to meet the standards of Jagex's new CEO and his team.

"Initially the reason for building MechScape was that we would learn all the lessons from RuneScape having run it for around four years at the time.

"It got near completion and we discovered, oops, it didn't do all of those things that we wanted it to. So we went back to the original design document and said 'let's do it again'."

Cancelling the project at such a late stage has made for an expensive learning curve, admitted Gerhard, although he agreed the company's continued financial success helped the situation.

"Yes, it's a luxury that we are doing well and we can afford to make the decision. I didn't make the decision lightly because it's effectively cost us tens of millions of pounds. Maybe more."

But it was vital, he said, for Jagex to release a game it was proud of and that its team would want to play. “ It's crucial to me we don't just ship a title because we've built it.”

"The previous game wasn't a game that we want to play. As much as we ended up thinking of it like a baby – we were 'reasonably' proud of it, we thought it was a good experience and we'd achieved something – it wasn't a game ready for launch.

"It was expensive. I hope never again to have to make the same decision twice. But it was the right decision."

Not everything has been lost however, and Gerhard says that much of the game – including its engine - will be reused in the new secret project the Jagex development team is now working on.

"A lot of the content will change," he said, "a lot of the gameplay will change. Exactly what the game will look and feel like I don't actually know because the guys are working on it as we speak. But we've got that ***** of lessons and everything else."

This new title will be released within a "meaningful time frame" he added with a smile. At Game Horizon's Best of British event on Wednesday, Simon Seefeldt, the company's head of business development, was more specific, saying Jagex's next game will appear sometime in 2010.

Ending on a positive note, Gerhard said the new MMO's development team has been "galvanized" by the decision that's been taken.

"I've been in the organisation for two years now and I've never seen that team so excited since I joined," he said.

"They've spent years of toil on this and never quite got there, and now the entire team, sees what the plans are to change and what the new game will be. There's a real buzz in that studio, which is fantastic. The guys are doing an incredible job of bringing this to market."

EDIT: Here's the link to the article. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/decision-to-cancel-mechscape-costs-jagex-tens-of-millions

Didn't Jagex hint another MMO in 2010 or something? Maybe this will be a key to that.

If this is Jagex's idea of a joke...

Sorry there dev time on games is **** stupid. Mechscape had been rumored for what 5 years? More? And they scrap it? lol! I mean hats off to them, I'd have released it and made the most of the situation, improving on it as it goes on. Not like runescape was good when it was about wasn't anywhere near good for years and years.

But a new game in 2010? Naa. Even tho they are reusing the engine I'd still call it 2013 at the earliest IMO Frankly I'm starting to think they're one hit wonders. Lucked out on runescape and they're never going to see success again. Far as i know funorb has been one big floppedy flop and i can't imagine it's met there expectations and now they've canceled this. Don't believe I've ever seen a game canceled so far into it's dev cycle.

I'm actually glad it got canceled. I wouldn't have played it because I didn't like the trailer.

Good riddance.

All I can say.

Another game in 2010? Err if they plan to make a whole game under a year, it's going to suck hardcore because a GOOD game requires more time. Give it time and work on it, say you will release it in 2014 or something. Do something that doesn't sucks.

There going to reuse the engine. Making the engine is the time consuming and expensive part. That's how developers can pump out yearly sequels to games they just use the same engine.

And most normal developers could easily push out a game in a year..an MMO I'm not so sure about. And then you factor in it's jagex who are just like Blizzard/Valve in that they wont release till their happy with it so expect it in 4 years.

You said it all
Making a whole console game in a year is possible. Some of games developers are doing it.

A MMO? No. They're probably indeed going to use the same engine to save time and money. But making the rest takes alot of time. Skills are probably the longest thing of all. One is already very long, think when you have to do it about 20 times. You already have over 8 months+ of working.

I say a big minimum of 3 years is needed for a GOOD mmo game. You can't do it under a year without the fact that it's going to be a real garbage. Even with a huge team of professional

If you remember, they've been talking about a "secret third project" for quite a long time now.

Mechscape always seemed, to me at least, a kind of dumb idea. Hopefully, they can find something to do with the leftovers.

From what I'm reading from your posts, you all are saying that the game will come out in early 2010, But that's just how I'm reading it. To me, I'm thinking almost the end of 2010 and if they have a whole new team that knows what they want, they might be able to do it. With the game engine out of the way, it might be possible. I'm just going to stick with Runescape for now, considering I have no clue how the other game will turn out.

thanks for finding this asovse =D>

epic fail jagex really all i can think of i was kind of hopeful to test out mechscape but probably not play it.But im glad it didn't come out though.

one reason i wanted it to come out was
1. i figured is it was good maybe less people would play rs=less people on willow tree's in f2p..lol
2.it would be nice to try out another game.

but really i don't care that much 8)

Exactly what I was thinking.
I wouldn't have played it actively anyway.

Very sad about this. for the last few months been talking to my friends of how much we want to play and for it to hurry up and be made.
I play a lot of games on the computer and wanted another. it sounded cool. and geewiz can't explain how much this kills me lol.
* sigh *

I knew something was wrong since the game has not came out yet and kept expanding the date and then just stopped talking about it altogether.

I'm happy that they made the decision to scrap it altogether, most developers would've either put it out before it was complete or pushed out a crap game.
I'm going to have to agree with Creepy on that Jagex seems to be a one hit wonder, I'm doubting whether they'll have a good moneymaker like runescape in the next 10 years-if ever.
