Ya, I've used it before. It can be handy if you need to share documents with a lot of people or like you said to work on an excel spreadsheet. It's very useful.

It's great for me since I don't have to worry about misplacing my assignments the day they are due.
also wordpad is crap

I use google docs a lot for school, there isn't need for a thumb drive which is really handy.

I rarely only use Google Docs to utilize real-time collaboration, otherwise I just share by linking to .docx (and other) files or emailing as attachments.
I do keep all my documents on Docs (or Drive I guess for this feature) by using Google Cloud Connect to sync my .docx, .xlsx, .pptx every time I press save to the cloud. But I'll never, ever, ever edit them directly on Docs or I'll lose that sweet, sweet fidelity.
download from cloud => edit on Microsoft Office => ctrl + s and synced to cloud => done
