From the Internet to the iPod, technologies are transforming our society and empowering us as speakers, citizens, creators, and consumers. When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense.
I would question the source of the story.
These countermeasures would be used to track a missing device. You also have to remember that these countermeasures would have to be enabled by
you in the event you lose your device. Right now on iOS devices you have to explicitly enable location based services before the OS will report any location data to an application, even Safari.
What has Apple done so far to lose trust? Have they made your details available to the public (ie. Facebook?) I still trust them with my data.
In regards to detecting increased memory usage to prevent jailbreaking, just another defence tactic by Apple. Granted the open ecosystem of Android is great for a developer but the closed ecosystem is good too. The closed ecosystem is good for preserving user experience to the t. Also I'm sure Apple wants to make sure their devices are used as they designed them, if I was designing hardware or software I would too.
