Okay I got my laptop and I have some questions about it.What are some things that I should know about windows 7 or any tips for it? What programs should I download for my laptop? How do I save to my D drive instead of my C drive if it fills up? Should I buy my games on a cd or online through steam (I think that's he right name). Also how do I get rid of the libraries, computer, and recycle bin from the desktop. Also sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Chances are your D drive is another partition on your main hdd, so if all you're going to do is save data there instead of the C drive, you might as well delete that partition and add it to the main partition.

Physical media is pointless, get what you can through Steam. Download whenever you want it, hard to complain about that.

Off from the desktop? Delete them. They'll still be built in, just not on your desktop.

Also, you might want to run PC Decrapifier to get rid of what you can while your computer is new. Trials, general bloatware, might as well ditch them now.

Programs in general, nothing unique about Win7, so Firefox, Chrome, Steam, Skype, WLM, Digsby (check it out if you dont know what it is...), Microsoft Security Essentials, Dropbox, 7-zip, etc etc. Not sure what else you prefer, but pretty much anything that you were using you can use again on Win7.

With my terrible knowledge of computers, I'll see what I can suggest.

About Win7: Mostly there are just some neat features on there you should take advantage of. There is the drag-and-snap feature which saves some time clicking maximizing but also comparing two windows at once. In the very bottom right is the show desktop button which is also helpful. The task bar is pretty simple with the icons and is a great place to put shortcuts for programs you will use all the time like a browser or iTunes of w/e. Other than those little features, there's not much else I use on Win7 that is very notable. I'd try to find or check out all the features and see what you like best. Good OS on the whole imo.

About Programs: Mostly I'll defer to what Pfk said since he mostly nailed it. Firefox is great for browsing, iTunes good for music and other stuff, a good antivirus like Malwarebytes or MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) or w/e, Steam of course, and w/e else you feel like. That's mostly just preference and what stuff you will need to use.

About Steam or CDs: In my experience, I do both, but usually I only use Steam for cheaper games, at least when purchasing. I usually buy games in physical form on CDs which can be a hassle, but I find it worth it. Sadly, once you get a game on Steam, you cannot transfer it between accounts, so if you ever lost your account or w/e, it be a pain to get the game(s) you bought on that account. CDs are just dependable on keys and the condition of the CDs themselves. Take care of your CDs and you shouldn't have a problem. In the end, it's personal preference again. I think either way is fine. Steam is definitely more convenient since all you have to do is download the game wherever you are and you have it. Granted, the only possible bad thing about it is if Steam ever disappeared along with all your games. I doubt that will ever happen, but the possibility is there.

Sidenote: Steam also has great deals on games from time to time if that's of any worth to you.

Nothing else to say really. Again, it's called a PC for a reason. It's your personal computer so just do whatever you think it better or pick whichever programs you will use and find useful. Just take your time personalizing your computer. It won't take you that long, but put some time into checking out the programs. Good luck with setup.

Okay how do I delete and add to the main portion? I can't delete the recycle bin for some reason.

In the start menu, search for 'hide' and one of the first things that should show up is 'Show or hide common icons on the desktop'. Select that, and you should be able to remove the recycle bin icon.

To delete that partition (if your computer didn't come with system restore discs, this could be the partition that contains your restore information.. But usually that's on a hidden partition which you'll see later, and that's not removable from within windows. You should back that up, just in case your hdd dies, or you move to a new hdd) right click on My Computer => manage => storage => disk management, find the D drive, right click, delete volume. After it's deleted, you should be able to Extend your C drive to envelop that space that you were missing.

Alternatively, you could do what I do and section off the drive into a few partitions. My D drive (second partition) contains my Steam games. That way, if I need to reinstall, my large library of games won't need to be re-downloaded.

Okay my D drive does contain my restore information so should I delete this or should I section it off?

If it's just drivers and the like, that's usually not an issue. I know my sister's and mom's new laptops just loaded that partition with random junk that Windows does sooo much better by itself.

Chances are the restore partition is hidden, and you can't see it unless you're under the Disk management window. From there, it'll say something like System Volume ####?#?### or something, and it'll be unable to be deleted.

If for some reason it is the restore disk, back it up and put the DVDs somewhere safe. Then it's up to you to decide what to do. Either reclaim the space, or leave it on the hdd.

Saying a drive letter doesn't really mean much... The convention is that the C drive is your primary drive where the operating system is stored, and often has other programs and data as well. I assumed that the D drive was just a partition, and from what you've done, I'm guessing that was correct. The E drive, I'm not sure, as it doesn't really tell me much. It could be another partition, though more likely I guess you're talking about burning backup information to DVDs?

I dunno. In any case, just start saving to your C drive. There isn't anything you've got to do, everything should default to some directory on the C partition anyhow, though you could change it to go elsewhere.

You can't backup to your main harddrive.. That defeats the purpose of backing up. Storing duplicate copies of data doesn't help you if your harddrive dies.

You have to back up to an external harddrive or via blu-ray (if that's a blu-ray burner)/DVD/CD.

Your "D Drive" was just a partition which is on the same physical disk as your C:. That means it is pointless to back up to D: because it's on the same HDD and if it fails both partitions are gone.
