Hey guys my old 40gb hard drive failed just after re-installing windows (so no files were lost)
So.......I need the forums help on choosing a new hard drive, This is what I would like

1.Has to be SATA/IDE
2.MUST be reliable none of that cheap western digital stuff
3.Must be affordable but reliable at the same time
4.Doesn't have to be big, I have an external hard drive
5.No Hitachi,it got extremely hot after only after about 45mins of use (This is the drive that died)

Thanks in advance for the help.

I am assuming you are looking for a 3.5" hard drive. If your budget is small and you only need a small hard drive like you said you could get the Western Digital Caviar Blue 80GB. Western Digital is actually a very reputable hard drive company.

For 20 Dollars more you could get the Western Digital Caviar Blue 640GB (currently the highest rated hard drive on Newegg). There is no need to worry about either of them bricking as the 80GB comes with a 5-year warranty and the 640 comes with a 3-year.

If you have a few hundred dollars to spend, I would highly recommend getting an SSD such as the Intel X25-M 80GB for your OS and programs. It will speed up load times by a ton.

You've said you don't want Hitachi, but on the contrary, I highly recommend them. I've got a 1 TB Hitachi drive and it's run faultlessly for about 15 months now. I'll also add that Hitachi I usually regarded as very reliable. I'd also suggest that your drive that failed may have been fairly old, and whilst that's not an excuse for it failing, Hitachi have really got their act together over the last year or so.

But if you're still not convinced about Hitachi, my second choice would be Samsung. I have two Samsung hard drives- one of them over year years old, and again, they've been faultless since I installed them.

I tend to agree with both above posters.

However, I'd like to add that A) Judging an ancient (40gb harddrive is going to be ~10+ years old at this point?) hard drive isn't a way to judge a company. If heat is an issue, go with a 5400rpm hdd as it will use less power and will create less heat. B) Nothing is wrong with WD or any other currently sold HDDs. Pretty much get the cheapest you can from Newegg / Tigerdirect that will fulfill your needs, and be happy.

I got my 320 gb external hard drive from WD. Don't use it much, but it provides a nice backup for my computer and iTunes. I don't look way into companies when looking for a product. I just want a product that works, maybe has a good warranty, and a good price. Usually, I only get an hdd when I get a new computer, so I can't say I'm of great use in this department. I do believe that you will find the best deals online, though. Stores will usually have higher prices unless you can find a sale. Hope you find something you like.

Alright since I believe you've got your answer, I'll go ahead and close this =). Let me know if this was in error.
