In History class today we were going over the polar ice caps and what would happen if they melted.
I learned that your great great grandchildren will never see Florida XD
I've never cared about this stuff before but this amazed me.
here's an excerpt that really explains everything I learned.

"Some scientists believe that global warming may be about to push the ice sheet over a threshold where the entire ice sheet will melt in less than a few hundred years. If the entire 2.85 million km³ of ice were to melt, it would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 m (23.6 ft).[2] This would inundate most coastal cities in the World and remove several small island countries from the face of Earth, since island nations such as Tuvalu and Maldives have a maximum altitude below or just above this number." -Wikipedia.org

Where i live right now would be under water.

this picture basically illustrates what will happen to island countries/states (in my opinion)

It won't be as bad as people make it out to be. There have been periods in the past which have been warmer than we are now. We can tell by an excess amount of CO2 gas that's trapped in a rock from that time. The movie "The Day After Tomorrow" is nice but it creates a bad picture seeing as it wouldn't happen over a period of a few days. We wouldn't see tankers floating into downtown Manhattan one day after it starts.

I think that there is a certain group of people that are exploiting the fear (it's a powerful force) of the public in order to turn a profit. My point is that it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I'm not saying that it doesn't exist I just think we need more information before we start acting radical. Data from more than 200 years ago is purely speculation, we don't have quantitative evidence as per temperatures for anything further back than that. The CO2 readings are good but we need actual temperature data.

We can't control nature. It will reset itself eventually, ways this could happen are asteroid impact or volcanic eruption.

PS: Even though I say we need more data, it's a great idea to be producing things such as the electric car.

I've heard a theory that the earth is actually beginning another climate shift, much like what everyone knows as the 'ice age'. Saying this, it's projected to happen sometime in the second half of this century when the ozone hole closes.

I was watching some TV program, can't remember what, but there's a massive peninsula somewhere on the earth with nigh on continual lightening storms, occurring for an average of 180 days a year, and it accounts for the largest production of ozone on the planet, really did look amazing.

i do believe we should start trying to find ways on limited CO2 release but some of the things that al gore wanted in the past were like To the extreme. think it was like take all gas cars off the road in 2010 or something really insane like that. humans do not like big change. we like little changes that will go unnoticed spread out over years.

i still think we should bring back the electric car, we are doing it but not at a good pace. hydrogen cars are nice but you still use fossil fuel to get them.

basically we need to find a way to leave our planet within the next lifetime or so. planet is getting very populated, wouldn't it be nice to move 40% of the population to mars or something.

By the time this happens, I will be gone. If I were to be around, then I am in a basin surrounded by mountains, so it will never find me here muahahahha. err... a little over the top.

I seriously think that by the time the glacier's melt, there will be a way to prevent unwanted floods (wanted floods are like ones at floodplains for farming), or less CO2 will be produced into the atmosphere and stop glacier melting.

On trekkie's topic:

I am waiting for a way to use water as fuel so it can just evaporate into the air and precipitate later. (I doubt this is scientifically possible within the next 50 years though)

Meh, i personally think its not that big deal.
Sure its not nice that Greenland melts because people live there, but i think it wont cause a water level to rise so much that it would cause a problem to other countries.
Expect Holland.
In short, Shreder, that what is in that picture is probably NEVER going to happen.
it has been a scientific research that even if Greenland or north pole would melt, water level would rise like 4-8 meters.
If you are in mountain country, like Finland, every year ground level rises few inches, so if north pole or Greenland would melt, nature would solve the problem for us.
but Hollands ground level gets LOWER every year, so...they might have a problem.

Or so my teacher claims.

I say Ice melting is just one thing global warming would cause.
Believe me, there are worse problems than ice melting.

Global warming is a big deal and North American governments (US, Canada) should be doing alot more but, as Shane has kindly pointed out there are some people out their that are exploiting people's fears of the unknown for personal gain. *cough*Al Gore*cough*
On the other hand the Right wing guys are acting as if nothing is happening and that ignorance, in my oppinion is even worse than the fear-mongering.

I whole-heartedly agree. I think it's important that we try to take care of these problems, but when it really comes down to it, I won't be around when it happens. I've never really believed in global warming as a major issue since I've heard strong arguments that prove the opposite (global cooling). I figure that there are just people in this world who are not satisfied if there isn't a crisis presently going on somewhere about something.
