The only time I check the dates is when i eat it and it tastes stale or not how it should taste. Or if its in the very back of the cabinet/fridge. :P Otherwise I eat it if it tastes decent.

To be honest not at all, my mom always checks them. But if for example the milk tastes like crap, I just throw it out.

Finally, someone who DOES read them. I don't think it matters for some types of things, but for mayo, milk, and eggs, I'm always careful.

Yea it depends how it looks/smells anything that is quite far out of date goes straight in the bin.

It's not like there are little gremlins that hide in the fridge and make my food go bad on midnight of the expiration date. The expiration dates are more like estimates,in my mind.
I don't pay much attention to them.If my food is moldy,it's moldy, so I throw it out.

I try not to go past one week on expiration dates.

However, if it's milk, I'll just toss it.

I just cleaned out the canned shelf of my pantry. I found cans of soup, beans, stews, etc. that ranged from 1998 to 2004. I chucked them all without a tinge of guilt.

I usually only eat non-perishables, and if I do eat things such as milk, its usually gone well before the date. A good smell is usually my method of determining if it is still edible.

I normally only use milk by dates, although a lot of foods I throw out if it's like 5 months past the expiration date, because by then it would be stale.

P.S. The milk expiration date is too early! You have to consume all of the milk within 10 days or so. :x

Mostly I don't go past the use by dates but do go past the 'use by dates' for eggs, milk or meat but I'll eat stuff like pasta, tinned stuff and other cerials past the stated dates. Especially if they are 'best by' dates rather than use by.
