Rep. Weiner from New York resigns. Did you guys think he should have?
I lean both ways. Yes, it was not appropriate for him to do this since he has a wife (He sext via twitter story here http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/06 ... iner-from-committee/) but I do not feel like this effects his work that much. I don't know a lot about him, but from what I heard (even Fox News, who is known to be a right new source says he was a decent politician) he was a decent politician.
I will put a poll up. Did you think he should have resigned? Give me your opinion. Obama did say he should resign, which I think was the final straw in Weiner resigning. (No Weiner jokes please ;p)

He shouldn't have, but he doesn't have much of a choice. What you do outside of your job is your business until it interferes in your job. In my opinion this doesn't really interfere with his job. At this point it's not like politicians have a sterling reputation of honor and good morals, looking that way at politicians ended at Nixon after Watergate. Also from what I understand he accidentally posted this on Twitter so it's obviously going to be everywhere but people have short memories. I'm sure at some point people would have forgotten about this, all he needed was some time but hey it's his choice and reputation.

It's quite irrelevant what Obama thinks in all this. You could replace Obama with "X" and put any person you want in their and it still remains irrelevant. Who cares what Obama thinks on the issue?
That aside, I believe he was right in resigning, but not because of the photos. Namely, his resignation is due to his stupidity. As a politician, you shouldn't be this stupid/careless/dumb. You are out in the open for everyone to see. Your actions are watched more closely than most peoples'. If a teenager does this, who cares? But as a representative of the people and as a husband with a wife, this is just plain stupid. If you can't stop yourself from doing something like this, how can you be trusted to make good decisions of any kind? That being said, there have been politicians who have done worse things and got away with it. Like you said imac, politicians aren't quite the best we have to offer, but they should at least try to be. Anyway, that's my take on it. If you're a politician doing stupid little things could have big consequences.

When the president of the suggests to a member of Congress to resign over an issue like this, I think that it does matter, and it did matter.

It could and it probably did. I'm just saying to me, it's irrelevant imo. The president can say all he wants to, but what matters more is if the people who elected you want you to resign or if the House wants you to resign. But take a closer look at what Obama actually said.
Quote:
I can tell you that if it was me, I would [short pause] resign, because public service is exactly that. It's a service to the public. And when you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions you can't serve as effectively as you need to, at a time when people are worrying about jobs and their mortgages and paying the bills, then you should step back.
Well, I don't agree that something like what Weiner did means he can't serve effectively. Politicians can make it through worse distractions than this. Obama says he should have resigned for the wrong reason. He should have said "I think that if it was me, I would resign because it was stupid. You can't be doing stupid things when you are a politician, plain and simple." Now, of course, he wouldn't say that, but it would have made more sense (at least to me anyway ). Regardless, the president's opinion isn't at the top of my concern list in this matter.
For some reason, Obama's response made me think of this. Mostly because his reason made no sense to me.
It's sad that the media focuses on Weiner's personal life when in all honesty there are far more important things going on in the world, many of which are actually impacting our lives. The two 'conflicts' we're fighting in the Middle East, various uprisings in the Middle East region, uprisings in Europe, unemployment and the economy. Pick one of these that actually matter to people outside of Weiner's family and we'll all be better for it.
Weiner may have made some dumb decisions (IMO), but the attention he got for it is astounding. Humans aren't known for their perfections, and his just happened to make it into the public view. I don't think anyone could say definitively whether or not he would have been a worse government official because of what he did, and we've certainly had other government officials have other sexual related issues while in office.

I agree. There are so many more important things that we need to focus on, and not some guy getting it in. Although I did not support all his views, he was the fire in congress that I think we need. He did not give a **** if someone didnt agree with him, he stuck to his guns which is not what a lot of politicians do these days. Whats funny is some of the people telling him to step down are without a doubt more corrupt than he is, in different ways.
So frustrated with American politics it is insane...

I'm looking forward to your candidacy one day, Ranging.
Yes he should have resigned. Just the other day I was at an event with a retired congressman as speaker. He quit his work as a politician because he and his wifes relationship was getting rocky. Who said this is common( for congressmen to cheat) and after most politicians careers they up with a divorce and a box of trophy's. Look Gov. Rendell of PA here. Finished his career in November is now single and living in a Philly apartment alone with his dogs.
