He definitely missed it. Just bad luck. You have umpired a game for over 2 hours, is the last call for the last inning and you think you are right. The problem is that as an umpire, you don't have the luxury of instant replay and can't go back on your call, no matter how bad you think it was. He did think he was right, though. In an interview later, he was completely convinced at the time that he was right on the call. Only later did he realize the mistake. The thing is that when a guy is having a perfect game, usually the batter won't even make it that close of a call, although that call wasn't super close. Anyways, people make mistakes like the handball by Thierry Henry. Sometimes you are just in the moment and those are the moments that all officials hate, especially when they make the call and find our later it was wrong. But missing a perfect game isn't the end of the world. Sure, it is really awesome, but in the grand scheme of things, it isn't that paramount imo. Too bad he missed it, but I'm sure he will have more opportunities.
The difference between the Henry handball and that baseball call is that the referee in the France v Ireland game was a good 40 to 50 feet away, where as the umpire in that baseball game was barely even 2 or 3 feet away. In my opinion, he has no excuses for getting that wrong.
