04-Apr-2011 - Livid Farm

Rakes, spades and dibbers are on standby as the Moon Clan are using magic to tend their new farm. Don’t expect it to be all tomatoes and cabbages; instead Pauline Polaris is cultivating a crop of the Jade Vine that has been drastically enhanced by lunar magic. Being typically tenacious, the Jade Vine has been morphed into a new strain of plant called 'livid'.

Pauline is overworked and needs your help in performing all the tasks about the farm using your lunar spellbook. Cure plants, fertilise soil, fix fences and perform many other activities to be rewarded with plenty of experience in Magic, Farming, Construction, Crafting and Agility. The Livid Farm is intended to be a fast-paced and quick-to-grasp area where you can train multiple skills at one time.

You will be able to cast each lunar spell in the Livid Farm even without the required Magic level, but you'll gain less XP and the rewards will come more slowly.

As an extra 'thank you', Pauline is willing to share her knowledge and teach you some new lunar spells, such as Remote Farming, Vengeance Group and Disruption Shield, to name just a few. Unlock all of these spells and you'll be able to purchase 'wishes', giving you temporary skill benefits.

Summary:
Where to find the Livid Farm:

On the north of Lunar Isle.

Requirements to use the Livid Farm:
70 Magic
60 Agility
60 Crafting
60 Farming
50 Construction
Lunar Diplomacy

In other news...

In preparation for the launch of clan support next week, the Clan Camp is in the process of setting up just outside of Falador’s south wall.

Around the Clan Camp, you’ll probably also notice a lovely new graphical look for the trees. When chopping these particular trees, you’ll be 10% more likely to receive bird’s nest (and yes, this does stack with a lucky rabbit’s foot).

I have managed to unlock the first 4 spells from Livid Farm, and I have to say that they are much more useful than I had anticipated. My original thought was that they were duplicative of spells which already exist, but it turns out that they are different and very useful.

The Falador teleport takes you to the southern gate of Falador, below the mining guild, which will be useful in a different way from the usual spot or the Cabbageport.

The Ardougne teleport also takes you to a new spot, the gate right next to the west bank - this may be one of the closest bank teleports. It isn't very close to the farm, but as pointed out in the last podcast, that isn't needed for those with the Ardougne cape.

The repair pouch spell not only saves the time needed to speak to the dark mage if you use the NPC contact spell, but it lasts for a LONG time. I have repaired the three largest pouches once each, having done a fair amount of runecrafting this week (Livid Farm does consume an enormous quantity of Astral and Nature runes). The giant pouch still hasn't decayed even though I had to then repair both the large and medium pouches. I don't know how much longer it will last, but it is far longer than the usual duration.

The remote farming spell is amazing. Really amazing. It literally gives you a chart listing EVERY SINGLE farming patch on Runescape with your current status. You can see if it is empty, weedy, full of crops, dead, ready to check health, or diseased. If it is diseased, you can click on that patch and cure it for free. What a boon to farmers!

I am taking a break from Livid Farm for a while, since my current goal was to get the farming spell. I think that the highest 2 spells will be fantastic for PKers, but I don't PK so I am not sure how much use they would be to me.

In addition, I felt like the experience gained doing Livid Farm is a great way to grind the skills involved. The magic and farming experience are quite hefty: about 44k magic xp per hour, and about 33k farming xp per hour. In addition, you can expect to receive about 13k crafting hourly, as well as 6k agility and 6k construction. I think those are very decent rates, considering that they are essentially a side effect of working to unlock these useful spells. Even after unlocking the spells, some players might find this to be a good way to work on these other skills, possibly as a break from usual grinding methods.

In all, I felt that the update was a very good one, much better than Shane and Chief gave it credit for in their update last week!

I gave it 2/5 because it is so heavy in astral runes for very slow reward points.

I have played several long sessions on it and only 10% of the way towards the first spell; I make nearly all my runes but if I had to buy astrals this would be a worse money-sink than construction.

I don't want several of the main spells so a total waste to get past them. I will do the occasional session but like a lot of mini-games think it will soon die off to all but the dedicated few.

This is a great way to earn a continuous amount of farming xp while growing other things such as herbs and trees. Shane kind of missed the point, but I guess the best players are the ones who can use different game features creatively.
