Today we’re pleased to announce the launch of an update to our High Detail (HD) graphics mode to incorporate DirectX rendering. We’ve also taken the opportunity to completely overhaul our graphics options system to make it much easier to use.

When you first load the game after this update, you will be asked if you wish to automatically configure your graphics options settings to best run on your computer. We recommend that every player does this – you may discover that RuneScape can run faster and look better than you have previously experienced!

Whether or not you choose to run the automatic configuration, the next time you go to change your graphics settings, you will then find that you can choose from a simplified range of graphics options: ‘High’, ‘Medium’, ‘Low’ or ‘Minimum’. If you wish to change any of the in-depth settings, you can instead choose ‘Custom’ to set the game up exactly how you like, as before.

The new DirectX mode will look identical to the existing OpenGL HD mode; its introduction is to allow more people to be able to use HD with fewer compatibility problems. It will be selected automatically for you (so long as it performs best!) if you are running on Microsoft Windows with at least version 9 of DirectX.

It's nice that they finally did this but I didn't notice any difference one way or the other. Now, maybe my mind's just playing tricks on me, but what I did notice is that without anti-aliasing on, the HD game looks like crap now.

Graphics overhauls are always good for the game. Glad they are putting more work into this to make the game look better.

You always could use the power of your GPU. I'm confused as to why they would even add DirectX support to the game when it is a Microsoft product and will only work on Windows.

DirectX is just another graphics library API and it is generally the same speed as OpenGL on any proper graphics card that implements all the common instructions.

You would maybe only see improvements on integrated graphics chips where not all instructions are implemented, but then Jagex say that Intel integrated graphics chips aren't even supported for DirectX yet: http://services.runescape.com/m=forum/f ... s?25,26,514,60970571

If you would like to read a bit more about what DirectX and OpenGL are, here is a decent article: http://blog.wolfire.com/2010/01/Why-you ... enGL-and-not-DirectX
